The Fire Emblem series makes its long-awaited return to the world of Three Houses after seven years. Building upon the core framework of its predecessor, Fire Emblem: Threads of Fate introduces several exciting new changes. Here are the highlights from IGN's preview—take a look!
Unlike its predecessor, Three Houses, which required players to replay similar opening sequences, this title features four protagonists, each with their own completely independent introductory stories. Choosing different protagonists leads to vastly different narrative paths. Each route boasts unique pacing and objectives, avoiding the repetitive opening experience of the previous game.
Notably, players can now freely switch between the protagonists' routes at any time without starting a new game from scratch. IGN describes this design as "drawing inspiration from recent Zelda games." However, the game appears to offer only a single save slot, which may inconvenience players hoping to experience all storylines. That said, players can use the "Rewind" feature to revisit any completed chapter.
Additionally, IGN highlighted the new combat skill system called Blaze Arts. Each protagonist wields a unique legendary relic capable of unleashing powerful abilities (such as flame bursts, wall-phasing teleports, buffing melodies, etc.). Using these skills consumes a portion of HP but also builds up a gauge—accumulating more grants significant stat bonuses, but if the gauge overfills, it triggers an "Overload" effect, permanently reducing max HP for the remainder of the battle. This mechanism introduces an interesting risk/reward dynamic to combat.
Finally, IGN stated: I remain deeply curious about how past choices will influence character interactions with Ashmer in the present timeline, and I am more eager than ever to complete every storyline to see how they will help me turn the tide and save this world from ultimate destruction.
Fire Emblem: Threads of Fate will launch on Nintendo Switch 2 on September 17, 2026.
