In a recently released in-depth interview, Ukrainian developer 4A Games revealed a fundamental shift in the development philosophy of Metro 2039. This new entry in the series no longer continues the previous "prevent war" gray moral narrative, but instead directly confronts "the cost of war," exploring themes of totalitarianism, oppression, and freedom with a clearer stance for the first time. Executive Producer Jon Bloch stated that the team has been working in extremely difficult conditions over the past few years, a reality that has inevitably reshaped the soul of the game.
Bloch pointed out that while previous entries in the series maintained openness and moral gray areas, the current creative perspective has shifted. "When the story explores the expansion and centralization of authoritarian regimes—where there is nothing good, only pure evil—the previous gray morality needs to become more distinct and clear." Co-Creative Director Pawel Ulmer added, "Metro has always been about the worship of war, about sacrifice, and about the cost of others' ambitions; it's just that its essence is now closer to reality than ever before."
To achieve this shift, Metro 2039 introduces a fully voiced protagonist to the series for the first time: "The Stranger," a character who reluctantly returns to the Moscow underground tunnels to face new threats. The underground society has formed a unified front under the totalitarian banner of the "New Empire," led by Hunter, a character from the first game who will stop at nothing to clear obstacles.
Bloch explained that the introduction of a voiced protagonist was intended to make the game's expression more direct. The writing team includes Dmitry Glukhovsky, the original author of the series and a renowned Russian writer, aiming to help players deeply understand the protagonist's stance and choices when confronted with "the darkest aspects of humanity."
Despite extremely difficult external conditions, the development team persevered. Ulmer described how "diamonds are formed under pressure," stating that the team "channeled all negativity and aggression into the product in a positive way," believing the final result will faithfully reflect their experiences. Bloch remarked that the challenges the team now faces are ones they "would never have imagined needing to solve even in a million years."
According to brief hands-on impressions from foreign media, the game demonstrates high standards in shooting mechanics, visual presentation, and narrative depth. The suffocating sense of claustrophobia and crisis makes previous entries seem "almost relaxed" by comparison. Yet, in this post-apocalyptic world, there are moving moments where families struggling to survive create warmth—unity and resilience shining through dim dwellings, conveying a faint but steadfast glow of humanity.
Metro 2039 is scheduled for release this winter.
