Squadron 42, the single-player spin-off of Star Citizen, has announced another delay, with the new release window set for Q2 2027. Chris Roberts, CEO of developer Cloud Imperium Games, explained in an official blog post that this move is intended to avoid the "attention crush" of GTA 6.
Roberts stated that the team originally planned to release the game in Q4 2026 (around November), but considering that GTA 6 would dominate all media and content creator attention at that time, he did not want this project, which has consumed twelve years of effort, to debut unnoticed amidst the "spotlight storm." He wrote, "Although GTA 6 won't be launching on PC in November, nearly all media outlets and the vast majority of content creators will flock to it, making it difficult for other games to garner any attention."
Although Roberts confirmed late last year that the 2026 release window remained unchanged and claimed the game was complete with over 40 hours of gameplay, this delay indirectly reflects the massive impact Rockstar's new title has on the entire industry's schedule.
However, the delay does not affect the preview plans for Squadron 42. Roberts revealed that the team will invite content creators and early supporters for a playable preview this October, with the specific release date to be announced "soon" thereafter.
Development on Squadron 42 began in 2014 and has now spanned over a decade, progressing almost in parallel with the base game of Star Citizen. Roberts previously stated that he hopes the release of Squadron 42 will be an event "second only to GTA 6," describing it as potentially one of the highest-budget games outside of Rockstar's open-world crime epics. Earlier this year, player crowdfunding for Star Citizen surpassed the $1 billion mark, demonstrating the substantial financial backing behind the IP.
It is worth noting that shortly before the announcement of this delay, Star Citizen experienced a disastrous live stream: while demonstrating the "ideal effects" of the new version, developers frequently encountered severe bugs identical to those reported by players. The atmosphere on stream was awkward, with even passive-aggressive exchanges between developers, further fueling external skepticism about whether the game will ever truly launch. To date, no release window has been announced for the base game of Star Citizen.
