During today's Opening Night Live showcase at Gamescom, independent studio Frictional Games, known for the SOMA and Amnesia series, unveiled new gameplay footage of their upcoming sci-fi horror title, ONTOS. This sci-fi mystery thriller is set to launch on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S in 2027.
In ONTOS, players assume the role of Aditi, exploring the transformed lunar hotel Samsara, where they encounter bizarre experiments and deeply unsettling scenarios. Each scene challenges the player's morality and encourages thoughtful exploration to steer the narrative toward different endings.
In today's trailer, Aditi discovers an experiment led by Crombie. Drawn to Samsara in search of answers about the unique nature of individuality, Crombie's attempt to create an artificial mind appears to have resulted in his consciousness being uploaded into a server powered by countless mice. As the machine's voice urges Aditi to reconnect it to its body, the body itself reacts with unsettling pleas. As the player, you must investigate the environment, uncover hidden clues, and decide how to proceed.
Will you follow the instructions issued by this rodent-driven machine? Or will you seek another way? Perhaps you might even sabotage the experiment entirely, driven by a morbid curiosity about what happens next? In ONTOS, there are no right or wrong solutions—your own moral compass will determine Aditi's path forward.
ONTOS features Golden Globe winner and Oscar nominee Stellan Skarsgård, and is developed by Sweden's Frictional Games, serving as a spiritual successor to the studio's critically acclaimed SOMA. Players can now add ONTOS to their wishlists on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, with the game scheduled for release in 2027.
