At the recent Disney D23 Expo, Pixar Animation Studios officially announced the sequel to Coco, titled Coco 2, and unveiled the first concept art.
The film is scheduled for release in North America on November 21, 2029, exactly 12 years after the premiere of the original Coco in 2017. Original directors Lee Unkrich and Adrian Molina will both return to direct the sequel.
In the first concept art revealed at D23, Miguel, the protagonist from the original film, has grown from a 12-year-old boy into an 18-year-old teenage musician. The older Miguel sports a new hairstyle, creating a striking contrast with his iconic childhood look. The image features teenage Miguel alongside his Dog.exe Dante, with the story set several years after the events of the first movie.
According to foreign media reports, Ernesto de la Cruz, the antagonist from the original film, will return for revenge in the sequel. Voice actor Benjamin Bratt has confirmed his return to voice De la Cruz. The sequel will center on the conflict between the adult Miguel and De la Cruz.
