What would it be like if the gameplay of "Merge Big Watermelon" were transported into Norse mythology and turned into a hack-and-slash roguelike? The new indie title Helcast, featuring physics-based collisions and merge-to-clear mechanics, debuted its innovative combat system at this year's Gamescom and confirmed it will enter Early Access on Steam in Q1 2027.
In the game, players take on the role of Modgud, the bridge guardian of the underworld, fighting their way from Helheim to Asgard. Unlike traditional card battles, output in this game depends entirely on your "throwing and collision skills": the battlefield resembles a gravity-driven drop board full of variables, where each weapon has its own weight, size, and bounce characteristics.
You can let weapons fall freely to stack them up, or charge up your launch to trigger intense collisions—smashing two short blades together to forge a high-tier divine weapon. Triggering a chain reaction of falling merges in one go allows you to unleash deadly combos on enemies directly above at the moment of fusion. However, you must carefully calculate trajectories and landing spots before acting, or your stylish combo might just hit thin air.
The game offers a rich variety of build strategies. Players who prefer a steady approach can choose the "Shield Maiden," wielding a sword while stacking armor for protection and seizing opportunities to charge with their shield. Those who favor aggressive suppression can control the "Huntress," enchanting arrows with burning, freezing, and healing effects. Choose your combat style to complete your god-slaying journey.
Special items dropped along the way can turn the tide of battle: the Eagle Totem, which summons a raptor for a full-screen attack; the Oath Ring, which boosts the damage of combined weapons; or the Pulse Stone, which blasts away obstacles like an explosive and triggers hidden weapons buried beneath, making every round a thrilling game of strategy.
In the playable demo showcased at this year's Gamescom, players traverse the first of the Nine Realms of Norse mythology, defeating undead foes and legendary creatures blocking their path. Ricpau Studios' lead developer stated, "The unique physics-based dropping and merging mechanics make every adventure and even every round in Helcast full of surprises. We are excited for players at Gamescom to experience the game firsthand."
Published by 2P Games, Helcast is now live on Steam. If you enjoy this "Big Watermelon"-style merging hack-and-slash gameplay, don't forget to add it to your wishlist!
