Rainbow Six Siege China Server Technical Beta Playtest Report: Finally Here

To be honest, I've forgotten when I first heard that "Rainbow Six was getting a Chinese server."

Rumors about the Chinese server have surfaced from time to time over the years, but nothing ever materialized... Eventually, all news regarding the Chinese server fell into a long silence.

Of course, you can still play on the international server, but it often comes with frustrating moments. Launching Rainbow Six Siege on Steam requires opening Ubisoft's own launcher platform, so every time you're eager to start counter-terrorism operations, you're forced to wait for several minutes. Even if you log in directly via UBISOFT CONNECT, you still have to face Ubisoft's infamous "potato servers," resulting in another few minutes of waiting.

√ Remember Me

Once in the game, there's a second hurdle. Although accelerators help keep latency on the Asian server relatively low, it still can't compare to the local 9ms ping players. In a game with a short Time-to-Kill (TTK), being even a step slower often means losing the round. The "potato servers" also frequently glitch out, suddenly disconnecting you. Additionally, the mix of players from different language backgrounds creates barriers in tactical communication, sometimes leading to conflicts that escalate tensions beyond the game itself...

Whenever these situations arise, I always think about the Chinese server, wondering if my gaming experience would be better there. But after imagining it, I can only smile helplessly and start the next match.

However, things finally took a turn for the better at the end of 2024. Rainbow Six Siege lifted its six-year streaming ban, and news about the Chinese server resurfaced. Tencent organized an official tournament at BW2025 and announced that the Chinese server would launch in the near future.

And then, the technical beta for the Chinese server of Rainbow Six Siege arrived.

How does the highly anticipated Chinese server perform? What are the differences compared to the international server?

The content available in this initial technical test is limited. Game modes are restricted to "Quick Match" and "Unranked," while features like the store are not open. Therefore, this preview report will focus mainly on the most concerned aspects: login methods, network latency, and match experience.

Let's start with the login method for the Chinese server. Like other games published by Tencent, Rainbow Six Siege can be logged into quickly via the WeGame platform, eliminating the need to launch Ubisoft's starter platform and significantly reducing startup time. This might be routine for players used to other Chinese server online games, but for "Ubisoft Boys" tortured by potato servers, the convenience of quick login is precious.

Unlike the international server, which requires an accelerator, the Chinese server allows direct connection, providing a stable and low-latency match experience. At least during my few days of playing, I didn't experience any packet loss or disconnections due to network issues, although some of Ubisoft's legacy bugs did make an appearance.

The gameplay experience in Quick Match differs from that of the international server. However, this difference isn't due to changes in game content on the Chinese server; in fact, these aspects are identical to the latest version of the international server. Even "Dokkaebi"—oh right, she's called "Guiling" on the Chinese server—uses the same skill set as her latest rework on the international server. From this, we can infer that the Chinese server version in this test has been synchronized with the latest international version.

Despite this, the technical test did not release all maps and operators at once. Players experienced classic old maps such as "House," "Chalet," and "Border," and could only use the 40+ operators available before Year 4. This is the primary reason for the differences in experience between the Chinese server test and the international server.

Without operators like "Azami," "Ying," and "Deimos," who significantly altered Rainbow Six's tactical meta, the gameplay on the Chinese server has effectively rolled back half a game lifecycle, becoming simpler and easier to understand. However, new map changes and reworked veteran operators add a fresh twist to this familiar experience, providing space for new and returning players to learn or review core gameplay mechanics without being overwhelmed by complex abilities all at once. In this regard, the Chinese server's technical beta version successfully caters to both types of players. For those who have been playing continuously on the international server, this test serves as a nice opportunity to reminisce.

Additionally, some may have noticed earlier that text and voiceovers, including operator names and character voices, have been localized for the Chinese server. For veteran players accustomed to the original versions, localization might seem optional or even slightly unfamiliar at first. However, for new players, localization makes it easier to remember operator names and their corresponding skills without needing to read subtitles, allowing them to accurately grasp key battlefield information. Furthermore, in terms of communication, players on the Chinese server can type directly in Chinese in the in-game chat, eliminating the need to switch out of the game to copy and paste translations as required on the international server.

Of course, when discussing localization, many players are concerned about "censorship." In this regard, some artistic assets on maps and the blood splatter effects when operators are injured have been modified. However, based on my personal experience, these changes have minimal impact, so there's no need to worry too much.

Overall, Rainbow Six Siege has maintained its vitality for nearly a decade globally thanks to its endlessly engaging core gameplay: destructible environments, intricate gadget interactions, and a tactical system that balances information gathering with gunplay. These elements have no substitutes in the current shooter market. However, this also means it has one of the steepest learning curves in the genre, which can be intimidating. Additionally, the necessity of using accelerators has kept many domestic players away.

The Chinese server's more convenient login, more stable network infrastructure, and social system based on the Tencent ecosystem significantly lower the barrier to entry for new players. With a continuous influx of fresh blood, the community ecosystem can remain vibrant, allowing the "Rainbow Six" IP to go further.

The technical beta is just the starting point. Beyond ensuring server stability and implementing strong anti-cheat measures, the Chinese server needs to pay attention to its matchmaking system. After all, if a newcomer who doesn't even know the maps gets repeatedly crushed by veterans in their first few matches, they will likely quit the game immediately.

Yes, I'm talking to you. Stop blowing up my buddy Xiao Dingdang.
