An international tournament held in Wuhan reshapes perceptions of esports

As a game media editor, I've watched countless esports events, big and small. Yet, the Delta Force "Havoc Warfare" International Invitational remains an event that kept me engaged with fresh excitement from start to finish.

At least, I rarely see 40 people playing a single match simultaneously on a grand finals stage.

The esports adaptation of large-scale battlefield games has always been somewhat contradictory. Indeed, grand spectacles, thrilling visuals, and unprecedented match formats provide inherent advantages for esports. However, the unique characteristics of these games also pose significant obstacles to their competitive viability.

Compared to traditional symmetric shooters, large-scale battlefield games involve too many players and maps that are too vast. Since "everyone has their own role," the situation is often complex. While this immerses players in the action, broadcasting such matches requires frequent screen switching to capture all highlights, which severely disrupts viewers' spatial awareness.

For a long time, the prevailing opinion in the player community was that large-scale battlefield games are primarily casual modes. You can tweak balance to make them fun, but that doesn't necessarily create a viable esports model. Forcing it might ruin the game's core appeal without successfully establishing an esports scene, putting the cart before the horse.

However, in hindsight, the problems that large-scale battlefield games are destined to face were well resolved in Delta Force. This is precisely why the "Havoc Warfare" International Invitational was successfully held and received a positive response.

There are two main reasons behind this.

At launch, Delta Force's "Havoc Warfare" mode featured a key differentiator compared to other large-scale battlefield games: its map design. Initial maps like "Ashen Zone," "Ascension," and "Tipping Point" featured higher building density and level design focused on providing clear path guidance, creating more intense, close-to-mid-range engagements. Although map scales and battlefield evolution mechanics have since been upgraded, this core design philosophy has remained consistent.

Although this design slightly reduces the grand visual scale, it effectively prevents the chaos often seen in large-scale battlefield games, offering a combat experience similar to traditional symmetric shooters for dozens of players. Building on this, the "Winner Takes All" rule, introduced later with fewer players and longer cooldowns, further reinforced this characteristic of the "Havoc Warfare" mode.

Therefore, adapting the "Havoc Warfare" mode for esports greatly facilitates broadcasting. The production team can focus cameras on a few fixed zones to capture the movements of both attackers and defenders, avoiding the loss of viewer engagement caused by rapid screen switching.

Meanwhile, the audience enjoyed an unprecedented view of the entire battlefield. Even viewers with less deep game understanding could fully appreciate the audiovisual spectacle that large-scale battlefield games are proud of, watching intense attacks and defenses involving infantry and vehicles. During the match, I even noticed an elderly grandmother, likely accompanying her grandchild, watching the screen with great interest—a level of accessibility and engagement that most existing esports events struggle to match.

Secondly, this "Havoc Warfare" International Invitational was deeply rooted in the player community. Before the invitational, Delta Force officials set very loose eligibility criteria for the preliminaries: as long as you could form a full 25-person team and meet the in-game rank requirements, whether you were a pro player or a skilled casual, you had the chance to compete for a spot in the International Invitational.

Since participants come directly from the player base, the common conflict between "esports ecology and player ecology" is eliminated. Moreover, this approach boosts player interest and participation in the International Invitational, promoting a positive cycle of "game-tournament-game." The fact that 21 teams qualified from the CN server preliminaries serves as the best proof.

Having addressed viewing experience and the impact of esports on the community, the Global Invitational Finals held in Wuhan fully showcased the charm of Delta Force's "Havoc Warfare" mode.

Unlike other shooters that focus on individual skill and highlight star players' flashy plays, the key to winning in Delta Force's "Havoc Warfare" mode—especially under the "Winner Takes All" rules used in this tournament and high-end matches—lies in macro-level tactical maneuvering. The team that better utilizes in-game resources and rules to secure objectives gains the advantage throughout the match and ultimately wins. This tests not only the decision-making skills of commanders and squad leaders but also the execution capabilities of the rest of the team.

In the finals between Chinese team LT and South Korean team HAN, both sides demonstrated this clearly in each round. During the pre-match BP phase, the referees selected "Fracture" and "Tipping Point" for the first four rounds, with LT starting as attackers in the first round and rotating roles thereafter.

As the first map in Delta Force history to feature fixed-wing aircraft, pilot skill largely determined the outcome on "Fracture." In the first round, LT showcased their strength through their air vehicle pilots. Early on, LT's attack helicopter pilot quickly shot down the opponent's fixed-wing aircraft in an aerial duel, neutralizing the defender's vehicle advantage. Subsequently, LT's own fixed-wing aircraft joined the fray, with two air vehicles camping the enemy spawn point, repeatedly destroying respawned enemy air vehicles immediately. By securing air superiority, LT gained an overwhelming offensive advantage, effortlessly winning the first match for a strong start.

After the role swap, HAN briefly gained an advantage with air vehicles and managed to retreat safely after executing several aggressive pushes with wheeled assault vehicles. At this critical moment, LT's fixed-wing pilot struck again, using superior mobility to shoot down an enemy attack helicopter and escape encirclement, preserving vital air power. Soon after, LT's anti-air vehicle operator destroyed HAN's fixed-wing aircraft, restoring air superiority for their team. Ultimately, LT firmly held Point B2, preventing the match from entering the late game where defense becomes difficult. With this second-round victory, the match reached match point, successfully rallying the audience who eagerly anticipated a miracle.

However, LT's path to victory was not smooth. Entering the third round on "Tipping Point," HAN quickly leveraged their strengths. Although LT's attacks on Points A, B1, and B2 went smoothly, HAN's ground vehicles used buildings at Points C1 and C2 as cover to completely suppress LT's fierce offensive. Despite LT's repeated attempts to counter with guided missiles, HAN used terrain advantages to withdraw their vehicles from blast ranges, preserving their combat power. Ultimately, LT exhausted their reinforcements in several failed assaults, leaving the match outcome uncertain once again.

Moving to the fourth round, LT played as the defenders on "Tipping Point." Seeing LT quickly abandon Point A and HAN swiftly capture B1, the audience, myself included, felt unprecedented tension. Fortunately, Everythinggj remained under LT's control. By engaging in prolonged tug-of-war at Point B2, LT successfully drained HAN's reinforcements. By the time the battle shifted to Points C1 and C2, LT held an even greater advantage than HAN had in the previous round.

Ultimately, facing pressure from LT's vehicles, HAN decided to launch a concentrated assault on C1. However, LT quickly triggered the Battlefield Evolution mechanic by using guided strikes on buildings at C1, forcibly resetting the capture progress. With two points still held, they secured victory in the final match and lifted the trophy.

Amidst cheering crowds, cannon salutes, and falling confetti, Team LT achieved their goal of keeping the championship in China on the final night of the Dragon Boat Festival holiday, making up for their failure to win in Vietnam last year.

However, throughout the International Invitational, we saw that teams from various countries, including runner-up South Korea's HAN and last year's champion Thailand's TXD, were formidable opponents. Although LT won the championship, their journey was overall quite arduous.

While I hope Chinese teams like LT continue to win championships, this competitive environment with strong rivals is undoubtedly beneficial for the overall esports ecosystem of Delta Force's "Havoc Warfare" mode. It proves that the global invitational is not an insular, self-indulgent event but has truly gone international, attracting players and competitors from many countries to delve into this arena.

After nearly two years of development, the Delta Force "Havoc Warfare" esports scene has truly matured. This not only fills a significant gap in the current esports landscape but also establishes a benchmark for fans of large-scale battlefield games. With the successful conclusion of this tournament, I believe that Delta Force's "Havoc Warfare" competitions will become a popular new form of entertainment, fully leveraging the positive feedback loop between esports and the game, elevating the "Havoc Warfare" mode and the entire genre to new heights.
