Dune: Awakening Console Demo Report from Gamescom: Single-Player Mode Arrives, Bringing Hope to Players

Dune: Awakening will launch on console platforms on September 22nd this year, which should be welcome news for many survival game enthusiasts and Dune universe fans.

Of course, some might question—while launching on a new platform is certainly good news for console players, what about us PC players? What do we get?

What if I told you that the single-player mode will launch alongside the console version? Is that news exciting enough? Surprising enough?

Previously, as a persistent-server-based massively multiplayer open-world survival game, most—if not all—of Dune: Awakening's content was designed around the "online" aspect. Even if players chose to play as lone wolves, they were still situated in public server environments, bearing all the costs associated with "multiplayer online" play—such as being ambushed by strangers in PvP while building, or having their bases wiped clean by periodic deep desert server resets, nullifying dozens or hundreds of hours of effort.

More critically, harsh death penalties and the hidden cost of running back after death in multiplayer online play place all resource pressure on individual players. Many Dune IP fans or survival-focused players who prefer building have little desire to engage in multiplayer PvP combat; they simply want to immerse themselves in the stories and landscapes of Arrakis, yet they are discouraged by this mandatory multiplayer binding mechanism.

Fortunately, the community's persistent calls have finally yielded a positive outcome—single-player mode is finally coming.

Of course, that's not the only good news. Funcom, the developer of Dune: Awakening, has not only introduced a single-player mode in response to community requests but has also optimized the overall gameplay flow.

In fact, at this year's Gamescom, invited by Level Infinite and Funcom, I tried out the console version launching on September 22nd, along with the single-player mode. During roughly 30 minutes of gameplay, I freely explored, built, and fought on the planet Arrakis.

While delving into certain dungeons, I noticed that compared to the overwhelming waves of attacks in server environments, enemy AI aggression and density in single-player mode have significantly decreased.

Even more excitingly, the single-player mode features a comprehensive set of difficulty adjustment sliders, allowing players to freely adjust settings in real-time, such as gathering efficiency, experience multipliers, enemy health, damage, dehydration and heat rates, equipment durability, and death penalties.

You can even toggle sandworms and sandstorms on or off directly in the settings.

Furthermore, the single-player mode will include a creative mode, where the periodic server resets in the deep desert will no longer occur. Base structures built by players over dozens or even hundreds of hours will be permanently preserved. Coriolis storms will still arrive, but their devastating clearing effect has been removed, leaving only repair costs.

This means players can completely let go of survival pressures and focus on base building and story experiences.

Some might argue that these difficulty settings seem contradictory to the harsh survival laws of Arrakis in Dune—hardly sounding very "Fremen." But this is precisely why Funcom didn't crudely reduce the difficulty, instead introducing difficulty sliders to give players the choice.

If you're after an authentic "alien slaughter" experience, you can still max out the difficulty in public server matchmaking or single-player mode. For solo players or casual gamers worn down by server mechanics, the difficulty slider finally allows them to freely enjoy the world of "Dune."

During my brief trial, I noticed that the single-player mode does not completely remove the factional struggles of the Landsraad. Meanwhile, thanks to the closed architecture of the console version, the system performs well in simulating AI-controlled hostile forces.

Most interestingly, unlike the PC version which requires waiting for shader compilation every time you launch the game, the console version skips this rendering step entirely, allowing you to boot up and enter the game at lightning speed.

Of course, the trade-off is generally lower graphical fidelity and performance on consoles. But the good news is that the console version can maintain a stable frame rate of around 60 FPS in performance mode, fully presenting Arrakis's vast sands, rocky canyons, Imperial military outposts, and Fremen underground caves.

The particle effects of sandstorms sweeping across the desert, the massive bodies of sandworms bursting from the ground, and the heat-haze distortion under the blazing sun—the retro-futuristic atmosphere built by Unreal Engine 5 has been fully preserved. Additionally, Funcom has confirmed that a physical disc version will be released for the PlayStation 5 platform.

In today's increasingly digital landscape, this clearly provides collectors with more options.

The console version of Dune: Awakening has also put considerable effort into controls and UI.

If you read my previous interview with Joel Bylos, Creative Director at Funcom, you'll know that to make menu items appear faster and allow players to use the item wheel more smoothly during combat, Funcom completely overhauled the controller control system, creating an entirely new set of preset schemes.

Compared to the "colder" keyboard and mouse, controllers offer undeniable advantages in haptic feedback. As sandworms burrow closer underground, the controller vibrates with increasing intensity. Melee weapon clashes, dagger duels, and gunfire all have corresponding vibration responses. Meanwhile, within the "Dune" lore, Holtzman shields can only be effectively damaged by slow-moving melee weapons, and this unique combat logic has been fully preserved in the console version.

As mentioned above, controller haptic feedback enhances the weightiness of melee combat.

Objectively speaking, Dune: Awakening's melee animations remain somewhat clunky, the variety of enemy types is limited, and there is still room for refinement in the combat department—but that's a discussion for another time.

In short, the Dune: Awakening development team has delivered a sincere and substantial response to the community's most vocal feedback.

It addresses the biggest shortfall in the game experience: the lack of a single-player mode. It also reworks controller controls, lowering the barrier to entry and allowing more series fans to step onto Arrakis. If you are a fan of the original Dune novels or films and want an immersive experience of this cruel yet captivating desert planet, the console version is undoubtedly the best way to experience it right now—though you can certainly choose the PC platform; it entirely depends on your personal preference. However, if you seek fast-paced, fluid combat, you should still be mentally prepared for the game's heavier, slower-paced survival combat loop.

It can be said that after more than a year of updates, Arrakis in Dune: Awakening is clearly well-prepared, awaiting more players to descend upon its seas of sand.
