Heroes of Might and Magic III: Remastered Preview: Reborn with Pride

Thanks to the invitation from Ubisoft, we recently had the chance to play the remastered version of the classic strategy tactical game, Heroes of Might and Magic III, at the Ubisoft Chengdu studio.

Led by Ubisoft Chengdu, this remaster utilizes Ubisoft's renowned proprietary Snowdrop engine. Leveraging its highly modular flexibility and powerful graphical capabilities, the original work has undergone a comprehensive overhaul and reconstruction, spanning art assets, operational interactions, and underlying code.

On this basis, the Ubisoft Chengdu team has preserved nearly all the underlying designs that stay true to the original experience up to the "Shadow of Death" expansion for Heroes of Might and Magic III. They have delivered an excellent response that honors the past without neglecting the present to the "Might and Magic" player community, which has steadfastly held its ground and continued to expand over the years.

Yes, that's right. This Heroes of Might and Magic III: Remastered will include the complete content of both the "Armageddon's Blade" and "Shadow of Death" expansions, avoiding the awkward situation faced by the Heroes of Might and Magic III HD Edition, which only included the base game.

During this demo, I experienced the game's first tutorial level, playing as Catherine, Princess of Erathia, who learns of her father's death. She sails back from Enroth to the kingdom left in a power vacuum, gathering forces along the way to prepare for the campaign to restore Erathia.

This content corresponds to the first mission of the "Restoration of Erathia" campaign in the original Heroes of Might and Magic III.

The tutorial level showcases the core systems of the "Might and Magic" series, including turn-based movement on the overworld map, tactical combat within battles, as well as main city construction and creature recruitment. These remain highly consistent with the original Heroes of Might and Magic III.

Of course, these seemingly familiar elements are built upon extensive and understated modernization efforts by the Ubisoft Chengdu team.

Heroes of Might and Magic III: Remastered and Might & Magic: Age of Ashes were greenlit around the same time. Both are rooted in the decades-long passion of the player community, yet they have chosen distinctly different stylistic directions in many details.

Compared to the latter, the remastered version features a more realistic art style, with fully 3D camera perspectives. The game adopts traditional human-proportion models and rich, high-contrast fantasy color schemes. Its overall aesthetic differs significantly from the cartoon-style art popular in recent years, instead resembling Heroes of Might and Magic V and subsequent mainline entries, consistently exuding a hazy nostalgic atmosphere reminiscent of the early 2000s.

Using the original as the primary reference, Ubisoft Chengdu led the creation of a vast amount of diverse art assets.

Besides the tutorial level, I also played the 2026 version of the classic official map "Sky High." It features four races, with two rivers cutting across both the surface and underground maps, interconnected in a crisscross pattern. The distribution of specific map elements is largely consistent with the original "Sky High." Players need to clear nearby neutral creatures and quickly capture resource points and secondary towns to expand outward.

On top of this, the development team thoughtfully "prepared" abundant troops and resources for us, fearing we might be rusty and get defeated by the AI.

Currently, the game offers four factions: Castle, Inferno, Tower, and Necropolis. So far, these four factions have undergone comprehensive visual overhauls, from concept art to 3D models. This includes the beloved main city animations from the original, as well as the appearances of fourteen unit types, covering tier-7 units and their upgraded forms.

As someone who got into the series with Heroes of Might and Magic V, I found the more retro, even somewhat old-school art style and unit designs in this title quite appealing. It better matches my expectations for the atmosphere of a classic work. The rest depends on how well the new generation of players accepts it.

In addition to revamped art assets and sound effects/music (as well as Chinese voice acting, which I haven't experienced yet but will be added in the future), this title also introduces moderate and reasonable modernizations to repetitive actions from the original, such as troop movement and city management, without sacrificing immersion.

The development team has added more quick-access sub-menus, further automating troop recruitment and city construction. Now, players can directly access recruitment and building sub-menus from the town button or within the city interface. This allows for quick one-click troop recruitment or scheduling of the main city's construction sequence based on time. Based on available resources, the system automatically arranges production orders that meet current conditions, effectively reducing the difficulty of managing multiple cities in the mid-to-late game while significantly diluting the mechanical repetition often experienced later on.

Remarkably, building upon these modern updates, the development team has retained almost all interface functions from the original. The game hasn't discarded past design choices for the sake of a single shortcut; you can still play Heroes of Might and Magic III: Remastered in the familiar ways of the past. The functions of various buttons and icons from the original have been largely preserved, with no changes even to keyboard shortcuts. Hardcore strategic elements like multi-city troop management have also been fully retained—making this essentially a painless and seamless comprehensive upgrade.

Speaking of seamlessness, Ubisoft Chengdu took the opportunity of leading the development of Heroes of Might and Magic III: Remastered to showcase a remarkable achievement in game remastering.

Despite rebuilding the underlying code of the original using brand-new engine technology, Heroes of Might and Magic III: Remastered surprisingly supports all player-made maps from the past. Even if a map is over ten or even twenty years old, as long as it was created for the original "Shadow of Death," you can directly import it into the remastered version and play seamlessly.

Even in recent years, with numerous excellent remakes across various genres emerging one after another, the seamless "time travel" technology in Heroes of Might and Magic III: Remastered remains remarkably powerful and prominent. Very few games with user-generated content can match the level of legacy support offered by Heroes of Might and Magic III: Remastered. Even benchmarks like Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, which features modest remastering and includes built-in map compilation tools, often trigger numerous numerical and logical bugs when importing old maps. This limitation stems from engine technology and code, representing an insurmountable gap between the ever-evolving player community and official game versions over the years.

But Heroes of Might and Magic III: Remastered achieved it.

It uses an engine renowned since its launch for innovation and technical prowess, turning back the clock several decades—to a time when video games still distributed subsequent expansion packs via CD-ROMs, players learned about them through reader submissions in gaming magazines, and then received them from the local computer shop owner. Time indeed moved slowly back then, but a small HOT Fix patch wouldn't cause all the mods and custom maps you spent three days organizing to vanish overnight.

Who says slow can't be fast?

Progress is always a good thing, but sometimes steps can be too large or unsteady, leaving no place to pause or rest. Perhaps, when the destination is unclear, stopping to look back at the line of players who have followed closely for twenty years might be a pleasant decision.

This may hold true not only for long-running game series but also for veteran gamers who have been around just as long.
