In the Fifth Year of Teamfight Tactics Mobile, How Can It Still Bring Something New?

On that workday swept by Typhoon "Dolphin," I flew from Shanghai to Shenzhen on a delayed flight. Upon arriving in Shenzhen, however, I felt somewhat unfortunate—unlike the continuous rain in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Shanghai, Shenzhen enjoyed clear sunny skies those days. The glaring sunlight made me miss the cooler temperatures... There's no helping it; nature's randomness is just that strong.

Coincidentally, this experience ended up echoing the purpose of this trip.

On August 11, the media preview event for the new season of Battle of Golden Spatula was held at Tencent's Shenzhen headquarters. We joined dozens of other media representatives to experience matches from the new season firsthand and listen to insights on game design from Matthew Wittrock, Lead Game Designer at Riot Games, and Tim Jiang, Senior Game Designer at Riot Games.

And the theme for this season is precisely "Forces of Nature."

When mentioning a theme like "Forces of Nature," many veteran players might recall the past "Elemental Rise" season. Both share a similar fantasy style, featuring comparable nature-based synergies and familiar monster-type champions... In fact, according to Matthew Wittrock, "Forces of Nature" drew inspiration directly from the thematic style of the "Elemental Rise" season.

Looking at this season's special mechanic, "Nature Spirits," it bears some resemblance to the "Random Wand" mechanic from the "Magic Mayhem" season. These spirits periodically appear in the shop, allowing players to pay a certain amount of resources for a temporary effect. Some effects directly boost combat power, while others involve gold, experience, equipment, or the shop itself, and some even present risky trades to the player.

In my first game, I initially planned to test out a traditional lineup with front-line tanks and back-line damage dealers. However, three consecutive economic augment runes made it hard not to be tempted to level up and roll for five-cost champions. Due to insufficient early-game margin for error, I had to rush D at level 8 to stabilize my health before hitting level 9. It was then that I encountered a "Nature Spirit" offering "consume health in exchange for a champion duplicator." I decisively purchased it, barely managing to assemble a two-star five-cost Ashe. This stabilized my health, and I decided to temporarily build a transitional lineup around this five-cost champion.

You could say the randomness of "Nature Spirits" saved me, but regardless, its impact on actual gameplay strategy differs from that of "Random Wands." According to Tim Jiang, Senior Game Designer at Riot Games, the "Random Wand" mechanic in the "Magic Mayhem" season felt relatively bland because players rarely changed their strategies upon obtaining one. In contrast, for the "Forces of Nature" season, they wanted players to immediately perceive how "Nature Spirits" would affect gameplay and lineup bonuses upon seeing them, thereby encouraging strategic adjustments.

Beyond my personal experience with changing lineups, this point is further illustrated by certain special synergy effects. For instance, the Inferno and Rift Monsters synergies are linked to the wand powers within "Nature Spirits," while the major Spirit Blossom synergy is entirely tied to the "Nature Spirits" mechanic—it transforms "Nature Spirits" into "Spirit Power," granting even stronger effects. If you've watched any creative gameplay videos, you've likely seen top-tier effects like "gain 777 free rerolls" within the highest-level "Spirit Power," which is more than enough for an entire match.

"Forces of Nature" also features a rather interesting champion—Lux. As a five-cost champion with the Elementalist trait, she can fit into various synergies and even become the core component for achieving high-tier synergies in certain situations.

Matthew Wittrock, Lead Game Designer at Riot Games, told us that Lux's design originated from a very similar concept attempted during the "Elemental Rise" season. Lux is a unit where "the version you want isn't guaranteed to appear." This means players often have to adapt their playstyle or consider integrating different forms of Lux into various lineups. This, in turn, influenced the team's approach to designing all synergies for the entire season. The team viewed Lux as a somewhat random champion synergy, testing players' skills.

This trial session was the biggest reason dispelling my doubts about the "Forces of Nature" season. Although some elements appear similar, or even identical in presentation, the actual experience is indeed fresh and coherent. This is because these mechanics have already been thoroughly validated previously.

From a development perspective, this might also be a reasonable choice—it's impossible to fix all flaws through updates within a single season, nor is it feasible to start over completely. Therefore, aspects worthy of optimization, improvement, or those temporarily unachievable were left behind, only to be rediscovered by players at some point in the future. Ultimately, this gave birth to "Forces of Nature," a brand-new season that synthesizes many traits, creates from scratch, and delivers a distinctly different experience to players.

Nowadays, Battle of Golden Spatula has accumulated plenty of content. Reorganizing these elements, seizing emerging possibilities promptly, and presenting them effectively to players is exactly what the Battle of Golden Spatula team excels at. Whether it's new seasonal gameplay within the game or various operational activities outside the game, you can sense this familiar touch. Step-by-step optimization of successful solutions, striving for perfection—that is what flows through the veins of Battle of Golden Spatula.

Speaking of which, we probably don't need to wonder "how can Battle of Golden Spatula still come up with new things" anymore—

Because it has never let us down.
