James Turner, one of the most recognizable artists in the Pokémon series, has officially announced his return. As the first Western artist to design Pokémon for Game Freak, he has now joined The Pokémon Company as Creative Director of Art and Design after a brief departure.
Turner joined Game Freak in 2009, making his debut during the Pokémon Black/White era. He quickly became a fan-favorite designer thanks to his bold character designs and playful concepts. Over the years, his Pokémon designs have included the Vanillite family, Golett and Golurk, Phantump and Trevenant, Centiskorch, the Sinistea evolution line, as well as Ultra Beasts such as Poipole, Naganadel, Buzzwole, and Guzzlord.
In addition to individual character designs, Turner served as director for the 2012 rhythm-action game Rhythm Hunter: Harmonic Knights on the Nintendo 3DS. He also acted as Art Director for Pokémon Sword/Shield, overseeing the visual direction of the Galar region and leading the design of various Gigantamax forms and Galarian forms. Even after leaving Game Freak, he contributed to the visual designs of Professors Sada and Turo in Pokémon Scarlet/Violet.
A few years ago, Turner left Game Freak to co-found the independent development team All Possible Futures with his partner, launching the critically acclaimed storybook-style adventure game The Plucky Squire in 2024. Now, he has officially returned to the series as Creative Director at The Pokémon Company.
Turner confirmed the news on social media, stating, "It feels great to be working in the world of Pokémon again, alongside a lovely group of people. I'm excited for what's next!" While specific projects under his responsibility have not yet been announced, the veteran artist's return in this new role will undoubtedly bring more creative possibilities to the future of the Pokémon series.
