Valheim version 1.0 introduces the trinket system. Once players accumulate enough Adrenaline during combat, equipped trinkets automatically trigger their corresponding temporary buffs without requiring manual activation.
Trinkets must be crafted at a Forge or Black Forge and cannot be obtained directly from chests or merchants. They have dedicated equipment slots in the inventory and do not replace the Megingjord belt used to increase carry weight. The effects listed in trinket descriptions are not passive bonuses; they only activate when Adrenaline reaches the specified threshold.
Adrenaline is accumulated by attacking enemies, blocking, parrying, dodging, and stunning foes. Parrying and dodging each grant 5 points, while stunning an enemy grants 3 points. Attacks increase Adrenaline based on the number of enemies hit, allowing the meter to fill faster when using area attacks that hit multiple targets. Casting with different staffs adds between 1 and 12 points.
Adrenaline gradually decreases over time, so activation efficiency varies depending on combat style. When facing groups of enemies, melee characters can quickly build up Adrenaline through parrying and area-of-effect attacks, whereas accumulating it while fighting with bows at long range is relatively slower.
Trinket effects cover survival, movement, and weapon enhancements, including a 25% increase in health or stamina regeneration speed within 60 seconds, increased swimming speed with reduced stamina consumption, instant health or stamina recovery, and temporary boosts to armor, movement speed, and pierce damage. Activation thresholds vary by effect; for instance, swimming enhancements require only 10 Adrenaline, while some combat buffs need between 50 and 85 points.
Other trinkets enhance bows, spears, and hammers, reduce blunt, slash, and pierce damage, or improve blocking, parrying, and dodging capabilities. One of the damage reduction effects does not stack with the abilities of the Bonemass boss. Trinkets designed for magic playstyles can also increase Eitr regeneration speed or temporarily boost Elemental Magic and Blood Magic levels.
The trinket with the highest activation requirement needs 100 Adrenaline points and instantly provides 100 health and 100 stamina upon activation. Crafting different trinkets requires materials such as Bronze, Iron, Silver, Black Metal, Chitin, Refined Eitr, and Flametal, along with loot from corresponding creatures.
