More hardware specifications for Sony's new handheld, codenamed "Project Canis," have recently surfaced. GameGPU reports that the device is planned for a late 2027 release, but Sony has neither confirmed this information nor clarified whether it is part of the PlayStation 6 project.
According to leaks, Project Canis will feature a custom 3nm AMD processor with six Zen 6 architecture cores, including four Zen 6c cores and two low-power Zen 6 LP cores. The device is also said to include 24GB of LPDDR5X unified memory using a 192-bit bus, with a power consumption range of 15 to 25 watts.
The GPU is reportedly based on the RDNA 5 architecture, featuring 16 compute units and supporting Dual-Issue FP32 instructions. In handheld mode, the GPU clock speed is 1.2GHz, yielding a theoretical performance of 4.91 TFLOPS; when docked, the frequency increases to 1.65GHz, reaching a theoretical performance of 6.75 TFLOPS.
GameGPU also claims that Project Canis will be thermally constrained in handheld mode, with internal game rendering resolution set to 540p, then upscaled to the screen's native 1080p via PSSR 3.0. The technology is said to support frame generation, but there is currently no actual gameplay footage to confirm these effects.
According to these leaks, PSSR 3.0 allows the device to achieve performance equivalent to 10–11 TFLOPS in handheld mode, and approximately 14 TFLOPS when docked. GameGPU compared these figures to the base PlayStation 5 and the PlayStation 5 Pro, which offers 16.7 TFLOPS. However, these "effective performance" numbers are estimates from the leakers and not official metrics published by Sony.
Hardware leaker Kepler_L2 previously claimed that Project Canis offers higher base rendering performance than the Xbox Series S, with stronger capabilities in ray tracing and path tracing. He also asserted that PSSR 3.0 delivers image quality surpassing NVIDIA's DLSS 4.5, though these claims have yet to be officially verified.
The currently circulating target launch window is late 2027, but it remains unclear whether Project Canis will launch alongside the PlayStation 6. Sony has not officially announced this device, and its final name, specifications, and release schedule are still pending official confirmation.
