"Marvel's Wolverine" Carries Sony's Fall Lineup Alone, Console Sales Still Rely on Third-Party Titles

Marvel's Wolverine was released globally on September 15, becoming Sony's only first-party PS5 exclusive for autumn 2026. Developed by Insomniac Games, the title is tasked with showcasing the hardware capabilities of the PS5 and PS5 Pro, while maintaining momentum for the PlayStation brand.

As of June 30, 2026, cumulative global shipments of the PS5 series reached 95.3 million units, but sales for the quarter declined by 36% year-over-year. With the slowdown in console adoption, analysts believe that Marvel's Wolverine serves more as a hardware showcase for Sony, likely driving upgrades among existing users rather than attracting entirely new ones.

Sony also launched a Marvel's Wolverine Limited Edition bundle priced at €649.99, but it only includes the disc-less model, requiring players who prefer physical copies to purchase a disc drive separately. The game also utilizes PSSR technology to demonstrate the graphical prowess of the PS5 Pro, which is priced at €799.99.

The game currently holds a Metacritic media aggregate score of 77, the lowest for an Insomniac Games title in nearly eight years. For comparison, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 received a score of 90 and sold over 10 million copies within approximately 100 days.

Digital Foundry praised the game's combat performance and ray tracing effects, while noting that its linear structure and certain segments felt repetitive. Due to the explicit violent content and strict adult rating, the potential audience is somewhat limited. Insomniac Games has stated on social media that the team is making adjustments to further refine the gaming experience.

Sony's console sales performance towards the end of the year will continue to rely heavily on third-party titles. GTA 6 is scheduled for release on November 19, with demand already causing PS5 Pro shortages at some retailers. Annual franchises like EA Sports FC 27 and Call of Duty continue to sustain activity on the PlayStation Network. Marvel's Wolverine fills the first-party exclusive lineup for September, but the primary drivers for subsequent console demand remain these third-party games.
