Bruce Straley, the game director of The Last of Us, recently discussed the current state of AAA games, bluntly stating that many large-scale commercial titles feel "boring" to him. In his view, the industry's lack of adventurous spirit and unwillingness to take risks on innovation are part of the reason for this phenomenon.
Straley made these remarks in a feature discussing the state of the gaming industry in Edge magazine. He cited God of War: Laufey as an example, suggesting that while such titles clearly require significant effort and expertise from development teams, they may not achieve substantial innovation in gameplay or design.
Straley's criticism primarily targets the conservative tendencies of modern AAA titles. He did not deny the production investment and technical challenges involved in God of War: Laufey, but rather questioned whether it could bring sufficiently noticeable novelty.
