Rockstar Games has not yet announced the exact release date for Grand Theft Auto VI's multiplayer mode, nor confirmed its official name. The term "Grand Theft Auto Online 2" used externally is unofficial, meaning Clancy's mentioned 2027 timeline does not constitute an official announcement from Rockstar Games.
It remains uncertain whether the current Grand Theft Auto Online service will be discontinued after the new multiplayer mode launches. Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick previously cited NBA 2K Online as an example, noting that its first and second generations, released in 2012 and 2017 respectively, received simultaneous support for a period.
Zelnick emphasized that he was only discussing unreleased projects on a theoretical level.
