Magic: The Gathering's New Set "Rifts of Reality" Booster Packs Will Feature Both Base and Mirror Versions of Characters

Booster packs for Magic: The Gathering's new set, Edge of Eternities, will feature paired cards of each character and their mirror-image counterpart. When players open a booster pack, they'll see two complementary character cards side by side, making the differences between the two versions immediately apparent.

Starting with Wilds of Eldraine, Magic: The Gathering's core sets have been advancing a multiverse-spanning storyline. Planeswalker Jace Beleren seeks to create a new Multiverse free from threats such as the Phyrexians and the Eldrazi, but this new reality would overwrite the existing Multiverse upon completion.

This storyline brings multiple Planeswalkers face-to-face with their mirror-image counterparts. Chandra, a master of fire magic, will confront her ice-wielding alternate self; while Liliana, who commands necromancy, must face a white-clad version of herself wielding life magic.

Tomek Vrana also undergoes significant changes. The original Tomek is a member of the Orzhov Syndicate, skilled at exploiting legal loopholes; his alternate version in Edge of Eternities becomes a Spark Mage who not only challenges legal boundaries but also breaks the laws of physics.

The paired design allows players unfamiliar with the characters' backstories to instantly grasp the contrasts. In addition to Tomek, other characters like Ajani will also appear in both versions together, enabling players to understand the mirror-image concept without needing prior knowledge of the full backstory.

Prerelease events for Edge of Eternities begin on September 25, with the digital version launching on Magic: The Gathering Arena on September 29. The global release date is October 2.
