Rockstar has confirmed that Grand Theft Auto VI will not allow free switching between the two protagonists in all missions. Whether players can switch between Jason and Lucia will depend on mission design and story progression.
Rob Nelson, co-head of Rockstar North and development director, explained that character switching in the game falls into three main categories: some missions designate either Jason or Lucia for player control, others force a switch at specific moments, and some allow players to choose freely. Nelson noted that character switching may sometimes be restricted by story progression.
The development team also cited an apartment building mission from the early game as an example. The mission initially allowed players to freely switch between the two protagonists, but the team later removed this feature. Considering Jason's military background, having him handle field operations better fit the story at that point; given the stage of their relationship, it would have felt unnatural for Lucia to take charge.
A heist scene shown by Rockstar also illustrates this approach. Jason shoots at police from inside the car while Lucia drives, after which control shifts to Lucia as required by the cinematic sequence. Here, the character switch is not decided by the player but serves to advance the scene.
Another mission featured at the end of the demo adopts a different design. When Jason and Lucia come under attack, players can freely switch between the two. This suggests that restrictions do not apply to all missions, with the specific approach varying based on mission content.
Dual-protagonist switching is a gameplay mechanic already used in Grand Theft Auto V. Grand Theft Auto VI narrows its focus to two main characters, Jason and Lucia, but does not fully unlock switching permissions across the board. Main story missions will prioritize narrative pacing and scene logic, while restrictions outside of missions are expected to be fewer, allowing players to freely switch between the two protagonists.
