AtomTeam is redesigning the series' gameplay with ATOM RPG 2. The new title shifts from a top-down perspective to third-person, set in an open world spanning 1,225 square kilometers, allowing players to explore alone or cooperate with up to three friends.
The series' first title, ATOM RPG: Post-apocalyptic indie roleplaying game, was released in 2018, featuring a top-down perspective and non-linear design, with gameplay influenced by GURPS rules. The sequel does not replicate this structure, instead focusing on third-person controls and an open-world survival loop.
The survival system in ATOM RPG 2 covers item management, body temperature, energy, hydration, and injuries. The game world is based on a Caspian Sea-style wasteland, divided into multiple ecological zones, allowing players to freely choose their exploration routes.
To traverse the vast map, players can use snowboards, or find vehicles to restore power and modify them. Tanks are also drivable, but they are late-game vehicles.
Dmytro Martynenko, co-founder of AtomTeam, stated that the team chose a third-person perspective to give the sequel a more distinct identity and attract new players. He also mentioned that the team considered future major changes to allow up to 100 players on the same map, but this idea has not yet been confirmed as a game feature.
ATOM RPG 2 is still in early development and is now available for wishlisting on Steam. In addition to the showcased third-person gameplay, AtomTeam continues to integrate this open-world survival system.
