Japan's PC gaming market revenue surpassed 300 billion yen for the first time in 2025. While the Japanese gaming market has long been dominated by console and mobile games from domestic publishers, PC game revenue has been growing steadily in recent years.
Preliminary reports from the Computer Entertainment Supplier's Association (CESA) show that domestic PC game revenue in Japan was 132.1 billion yen in 2021, surpassing 300 billion yen for the first time in 2025. The share of PC games in Japan's total gaming market revenue also rose from 6% in 2021 to 12%.
Looking at Japan's annual Steam revenue chart, the top three are Counter-Strike 2, PUBG, and Apex Legends. Among the top twelve by revenue, only Capcom's Monster Hunter Wilds comes from a Japanese publisher; ARC Raiders and Call of Duty also made the list.
The playtime leaderboard presents a different set of titles: Left 4 Dead 2 ranks first, followed closely by Terraria, with Dota 2 and Stardew Valley also on the list. The sustained viewership and gameplay content driven by multiplayer shooters and titles like Minecraft are also linked to the expansion of Japan's PC gaming audience.
During the same period, Japan's mobile game revenue grew by only 4.5% compared to 2021, but still accounted for 71% of the annual gaming market revenue. Console game revenue fluctuated, with a 26.7% increase in 2025 compared to 2021 following the launch of Switch 2. An increasing number of Japanese developers who previously did not release PC versions of their games are now publishing titles on this platform.
