Overwatch Director Discusses New Hero Each Season: Encouraging Players to Relearn Parts of the Gameplay

Recently, Overwatch Game Director Aaron Keller stated that the game now adds a new hero every season, requiring players to constantly adapt to changes and relearn parts of the gameplay. He referred to this approach internally as "resetting the mastery curve."

Keller discussed this concept during BlizzCon 2026. Multiplayer games have always faced balancing issues: early Deathmatch maps in Doom were asymmetrical, and players in GoldenEye 007 would vie for powerful weapons; in Super Smash Bros., players even debated fair matches using rules like "Fox only, Final Destination, no items." Overwatch also needs to handle character balance while continuously adding content.

Keller said the team wants players to occasionally need to reinterpret parts of the game, but heroes should still retain their distinct characteristics. Since 2016, some heroes have undergone changes, and the number of playable heroes has exceeded 50. He believes that with the continuous addition of new heroes, the competitive environment will always change, and players will always have new situations to deal with.

At the start of this season, Overwatch launched five new heroes at once, and the game's name dropped the "2," reverting to just Overwatch. Keller stated that the influx of new characters kept players busy trying different playstyles, leading to a measurable decrease in toxic behavior within the game. He expects more moments for players to try new gameplay mechanics each year going forward.

As players gradually figure out the strengths, weaknesses, and team compositions of the new heroes, the team still needs to continue adjusting balance. Keller stated that adjustments must ensure heroes fit their design roles while maintaining competitive fairness; the team will not modify the game just for the sake of change. When making balance adjustments, the goal is to make matches more balanced and competitive.
