Mod Adds Full Path Tracing to Grand Theft Auto 2! Also Improves Widescreen Display

A modder has released an RTX Remix mod for Grand Theft Auto 2, adding full path tracing to this 1999 top-down game while improving 16:9 widescreen display.

The mod leverages NVIDIA RTX Remix to replace the game's original lighting with path tracing. Flames, explosions, and muzzle flashes all produce dynamic lighting; with Remix Plus, the game also features a dynamic day-night cycle.

Some textures have been enhanced with emissive maps, allowing objects and light sources to glow. This effect is more noticeable at night: headlights, flames, and other light sources can illuminate their surroundings.

The mod also adjusts how Grand Theft Auto 2 displays in 16:9 aspect ratio. According to the release notes, this change prevents vehicles and pedestrians from suddenly appearing on the sides of the expanded view.

Players can press F4 to open the RTX Remix settings panel and adjust lighting and time of day. The mod also supports frame generation, helping to push performance toward 60 FPS.

The mod's source code is publicly available on GitHub under the MIT license. RTX Remix takes over the original rendering pipeline by placing runtime files alongside the game executable, providing path-traced lighting.
