Minecraft was confirmed during the latest Minecraft Live broadcast to launch on Nintendo Switch 2 on October 27, 2026. The stream also revealed the Ice Caves biome coming in the next content update, along with future plans such as Minecraft Dungeons 2 and a series-themed park area.
The Switch 2 version will have the Vibrant Visuals graphics feature enabled by default, improving lighting, shadows, and other visual effects. Compatible Minecraft Marketplace content will also support this feature. Players who already own the Switch version can obtain the Switch 2 version via a digital upgrade path, though it remains unclear whether this upgrade will be free or paid. The Super Mario Mash-up Pack, exclusive to Nintendo platforms, will also be updated to leverage the new graphical improvements, featuring Mario-themed worlds, music, and skins, allowing players to explore locations such as Peach's Castle and Delfino Plaza.
The next content update will add the Ice Caves biome. These caves contain ice, calcite, icicles growing from the ceiling, and glowing ice crystals found on the ground. The update will also introduce a yet-to-be-officially-named cold-region zombie variant whose attacks cause damage and freezing effects, with some individuals capable of throwing iceballs.
Minecraft Dungeons 2 is planned for release on September 29, 2026. The story takes place in a world where ecological balance has been disrupted, and the Illagers have established a High Council. The sequel will feature interconnected new worlds instead of the level-based missions from the previous game; players can jump and explore rifts scattered throughout the world.
These rifts may lead players to a new dimension called "The Sift." This vibrant dimension includes areas such as Meadow and Carapace, which players will first explore in Minecraft Dungeons 2. According to the plans announced during the live stream, The Sift will also be added to Minecraft Java Edition and Bedrock Edition in 2027, becoming the fourth dimension alongside the Overworld, the Nether, and the End, marking the first new dimension in the series in over 14 years.
The Minecraft World themed area is scheduled to open in 2027 at Chessington World of Adventures Resort in London. This area will feature experiences tailored to different players, including a Minecraft-themed hotel, an ocean-inspired restaurant, and an indoor-outdoor roller coaster themed after the game's Nether called "Escape the Nether."
Additionally, the Minecraft Marketplace will introduce sound packs, adding new audio effects for adventure and building.
