Civilization VII Restores Single-Civ Mode, Makes Age Transitions Optional

Firaxis has adjusted the core mechanics of Civilization VII with the "Tested by Time" update, making era transitions optional and reintroducing the traditional single-civilization mode. Players can now guide the same civilization from start to finish.

At launch, Civilization VII required players to switch civilizations during different stages of a game. This design stemmed from Sid Meier's long-standing dissatisfaction with a series mechanic: unique civilization abilities often stand out only in specific historical periods, losing their distinctiveness in others. Creative Director Ed Beach adopted this approach, hoping players would continuously engage with the unique abilities of different cultures throughout history.

Executive Producer Dennis Shirk acknowledged that this significant departure from the series' formula divided players, particularly failing to meet the expectations of some veteran players who have wanted since the original game to develop the same civilization from start to finish. Beach stated that restoring the single-civilization mode was personally challenging for him, as it wasn't part of the initial design vision, but many players clearly wanted to see the story of one people span an entire game—a playstyle not adequately served by the launch version.

During development of the update, the team held multiple public workshops and adjusted content based on player feedback. Beach believes this process worked well and hopes to continue using it in the future. The team views this update as a successful adjustment, although Civilization VII's overall Steam reviews remain mixed. Firaxis is currently preparing another update, planned for release alongside the first expansion, Rising Tide.
