Mod author Arhkain has revived his personal project, Retro Forever, aiming to create a more complete first-person experience for World of Warcraft, adding visual and audio feedback corresponding to combat. The project is still in its early stages and is not yet a downloadable, playable product.
Arhkain stated that he has been accustomed to zooming in the camera since 2004, observing the game world from the perspective of his character's eyes. However, World of Warcraft was not originally designed for first-person gameplay and lacked corresponding graphical and interface options. During the Classic Hardcore era, he used WeakAuras to display visuals based on combat events, but later put the project on hold due to time and life commitments.
After experiencing the World of Warcraft Forever beta, Arhkain decided to resume development, but Blizzard adjusted restrictions on combat addons, and WeakAuras ceased related development. The project subsequently continued using its fork, ForeverAuras, with the author having resolved some issues encountered during the transition to the Classic version.
According to current plans, Retro Forever will initially focus on creating assets for the Mage class. If players show sufficient interest, the author will seek community collaboration to add first-person graphics for other classes. The project's existing 2D assets are directly adapted from or inspired by Doom, Heretic, and The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall, primarily because it is difficult for an individual developer to handle full production based on existing 3D models.
Arhkain also acknowledged that the first-person perspective reduces spatial awareness, making players more susceptible to attacks from enemies outside their field of view, so this playstyle may not be suitable for dungeons or raids. On the other hand, the close-up perspective highlights the size of creatures and the scale of architecture within the game, enhancing immersion during exploration.
