As Xbox celebrates its 25th anniversary, a long-time player familiar with multiple platforms reflects on his gradual shift toward Microsoft consoles. He states that despite ongoing concerns, his friends remain on Xbox, and the emotional bonds formed through years of shared gaming have convinced him to stay.
This Windows Central author first encountered the original Xbox in the early 2000s through his older brother and friends, experiencing cooperative campaigns and "Blood Gulch" multiplayer matches in Halo. At the time, he preferred the PlayStation 2 and GameCube, causing him to miss many original Xbox titles. During the Xbox 360 era, games like Gears of War, Mass Effect, Fallout 3, and BioShock significantly increased his engagement with Microsoft consoles, often leading him to choose the Xbox version of multi-platform games due to his preference for controller controls.
The launch of the Xbox One was accompanied by controversies such as mandatory online connectivity and bundling with Kinect. The author, weary of motion-controlled gameplay and concerned about Sony account security, gradually shifted his console gaming focus to Xbox. Among these experiences, Monster Hunter: World had a particularly profound impact on him; his Xbox save file exceeds 2,000 hours, with combat, gear collection, and hunting with friends standing out as his most memorable multiplayer experiences.
Entering the Xbox Series X|S era, he has come to appreciate titles like Elden Ring, Lies of P, and Baldur's Gate 3. At the same time, he expresses concerns about layoffs, account management, rising costs, and how online services might affect the use of both digital and physical disc versions. Nevertheless, for him, the platforms where his friends are located and the shared memories accumulated over the years remain the primary reasons for continuing to choose Xbox.
