Silent Hill 2 Remake Experimental Mod Reduces Stuttering, Boosts 0.1% Lows by 52.4%!

More than two years after the release of the Silent Hill 2 remake, stuttering still occurs when traversing scenes. Mod author bigbullet3 has now released the experimental "21 Sacraments Patch 0.5.2," which attempts to adjust the build scheduling for ray tracing geometry, resulting in a 52.4% improvement in the 0.1% low FPS during testing.

This solution is inspired by the Ishimura Patch for Dead Space but employs a different approach. The mod modifies r.RayTracing.Geometry.MaxBuiltPrimitivesPerFrame, setting a soft cap of 50,000 primitives per frame to distribute the build workload across multiple frames, rather than just adjusting common Unreal Engine 5 parameters. It does not increase available VRAM, and particularly large tasks may still exceed the limit.

The test platform featured a Core i7-14700K and an RTX 4090 at 1440p resolution. The test route extended from the Martin Street save point to the Woodside Apartments on Katz Street, lasting about 40 seconds. After installing the mod, the average frame rate increased from 181.7 to 184.6, the 1% low FPS rose from 80.7 to 103.2, and the 0.1% low FPS climbed from 45.8 to 69.8.

Meanwhile, Adaptive STDDEV dropped from 59.8 to 13.0, CapFrameX-recorded stutter time decreased from 0.21 seconds to 0.03 seconds, and the highest frame time spikes fell from approximately 25 ms to 18 ms. This patch is designed for the Steam version, can be toggled on/off with F8, and writes diagnostic files to the local directory. The author notes that actual results will vary depending on hardware, settings, and location; the patch cannot eliminate all sources of stuttering in Unreal Engine 5, nor can it resolve every frame time spike.
