Hong Kong indie game studio Aurora Studio has launched the Steam page for its first-person Japanese folk horror game, Tsushima: Soul Ghost, and released a new trailer. Developed using Unreal Engine 5, the official release date has not yet been announced.
The game draws inspiration from Japan's Edo period, Shinto beliefs, and yokai folklore. Players follow Maba Tsushima, a shrine maiden awakened from an ancient seal, as she explores forgotten villages, graveyards, and shrines, investigating the truth behind a failed sealing ritual in a world where the human and spirit realms intertwine.
The game does not focus on intense combat, but rather on paranormal investigation, environmental exploration, and ritual experiences. Players can use "Spirit Vision" to discover hidden supernatural traces, collect wandering souls using amulets, and then find shrine altars to perform purification. The team stated that future content will gradually expand to include investigations in Edo-period post towns, encounters with yokai, and ox-cart pilgrimages.
Aurora Studio previously participated in the development and international publishing of Bus Simulator 2: Project Numazu, and considers Tsushima: Soul Ghost an important project for continuing to develop original IP. The game is still in development; an early Windows demo is available on itch.io, and the team is continuously refining core gameplay and environments.
