The Borderlands series has now surpassed 100 million copies sold worldwide. In confirming this milestone, officials noted that the series, which began with its first title in 2009, owes its success to the players who have joined over the years.
Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford discussed this goal during Gamescom 2025. With Borderlands 4 about to launch, he recalled how the original game received almost no attention at its Gamescom debut, with many predicting the project would fail. At the time, Pitchford predicted that total series sales would easily surpass 100 million copies after the release of Borderlands 4. With the official announcement of the latest cumulative data, the Borderlands series has now crossed this sales threshold.
According to historical sales charts cited in reports, Borderlands sits in the approximately 100 million copy range alongside Gran Turismo and Tomb Raider, tying for the 23rd best-selling video game series of all time. The list places it behind Star Wars games and Monster Hunter, but ahead of The Witcher, Battlefield, and Halo.
