GTA 6 and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remaster are scheduled to launch within weeks of each other in November 2026. According to The Verge, while the clash between these two titles is attention-grabbing, it feels more like an echo of the gaming industry's past era, with their hype unable to mask the widespread challenges facing the sector.
GTA 6 is Rockstar Games' new title, developed over 13 years. Circana estimates that 29% of U.S. gamers intend to purchase it, with demand potentially driving sales of PS5 and Xbox Series consoles. Since its release in 2013, GTA V has sold 230 million copies and has remained in the top 20 best-selling games in the U.S. for 13 consecutive years.
Nintendo, meanwhile, is positioning The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remaster as a key exclusive for the holiday season. The game not only serves to modernize a classic title but will also be released ahead of the live-action The Legend of Zelda movie in 2027, giving Nintendo the confidence to go head-to-head with Rockstar Games.
However, the gaming industry in 2026 still faces large-scale layoffs, studio closures, rising hardware costs, pressure on live-service games, and uncertainties brought by AI tools. Nintendo controls both hardware and software ecosystems, while Rockstar benefits from the long-term success of its previous titles—conditions that are difficult to replicate. Therefore, the hype surrounding these two blockbuster titles cannot be seen as a universal solution to the industry's struggles.
