Amplitude Studios has announced that the sequel to its 2021 historical turn-based strategy game Humankind, titled Humankind II, will launch on PC in 2027. The studio revealed this news during the Opening Night Live broadcast at Gamescom on August 25, 2026, though no specific release date was provided. Players can already add the game to their wishlists on Steam.
Humankind II retains the core gameplay of its predecessor. Players can build cities, develop technologies, form alliances, command armies, and guide their people from the earliest settlements to the modern era, with each age transforming both the civilization itself and the world around it.
Cultures Borrowing from Each Other
The cultural evolution mechanic has been redesigned. With each new era, players can choose a new culture that expands and deepens their civilization's identity, unlocking unique customs through a cultural development tree. According to Amplitude, this offers greater personalization, stronger era consistency, and continuity, allowing players to either follow historical paths or forge their own way.
The October gameplay overview confirmed over 70 playable cultures, ten more than in the original game. Amplitude unveiled new cultures including the Saqqaq, Etruscans, and Scythians.
Changing Map Climates
Climate change alters the strategic landscape across different eras. Players must adapt their cities and economies to shifting biomes, protect critical resources, and balance short-term growth against consequences that may last for generations.
Content Shown in Gameplay Overview
Amplitude released its first gameplay overview video on October 15, 2026, featuring demonstrations by Game Director Benoit Humbert and Narrative Director Jeff Spock. Each game begins with a "Creation MYTH - Steam Edition," narrating the mythological story that shapes the start of the player's journey. The video focused on the "Tamer of Floods" MYTH - Steam Edition associated with Ancient Egypt, showcasing how players establish their first settlement and progress through six eras.
A new Historical Mode allows players to revisit, redefine, or rewrite history on an authentic Earth map developed in collaboration with over 30 historians. Humbert stated that the team aims for every player choice to shape the face of civilization.
Visuals and Community
Amplitude also promises improved visuals, a more modern interface, and gameplay refined based on years of player feedback. Development will continue to engage with the community through the Amplifiers platform, where players can share feedback, earn rewards, and follow the latest updates from the development team. More details are expected to be revealed in the coming weeks or months.
