Nexus Mods has announced a new generative AI content policy. Going forward, mod authors must disclose where and how they have used AI, allowing users to make informed decisions before downloading. The platform will not impose a blanket ban on AI-generated content.
Current mod authors will be given a 60-day grace period to add the required information. Nexus Mods plans to enforce the new rules through manual moderation and encourages users to report mods that may contain undisclosed AI content.
The platform's existing AI tags will also serve a clearer filtering purpose. Authors can specify whether an entire mod was created with AI, or if AI was used only in the mod page description or certain assets. Users can then filter out specific types of AI mods from the homepage and other areas based on their personal preferences.
Although some community members have called for a complete ban on AI-generated content, Nexus Mods has refused to adopt a one-size-fits-all approach. The site states that the extent of AI involvement in mod creation varies, and as long as works comply with requirements regarding licensing, transparency, presentation, and code of conduct, they may still be published on the platform. As related tools and their uses continue to evolve, these rules will be adjusted accordingly in the future.
