This year,During the June Nintendo Direct, Gust announced the new Atelier series title, "Atelier Karia: The Kingdom of Night and the Landmark of Memories." Although this is a mainline entry with a new protagonist, it shares the same worldview as the previous title, "Atelier Yumia: The Alchemist of Memories & the Fantasmical Land." Yumia, the previous protagonist, will appear in this game as a mentor-like figure to the new protagonist, Karia.
This design is relatively novel for the series. Both the unique systems in this title and its connections to the previous game are worth discussing.
During "Tokyo Game Show 2026," we had the opportunity to interview Gust Brand Manager and Producer Junzo Hosoi and this game's Director Daiki Fukui, discussing many details about this title and its predecessor in depth.

Q: The official team previously released a survey gathering player opinions on the "body shape change due to eating" system. What is the current status of this system? Are there plans to add more physical state changes in the future, such as becoming thinner when hungry or having a worse complexion after eating poisonous items?
Hosoi:The final conclusion on the body shape change survey has not yet been determined; what was previously shared was only an interim result. We are currently discussing internally what kind of features to implement and how to realize them in a way that satisfies players if we decide to include them. Includingincluding whether or not to implement it, are undergoing final evaluation. Currently, things are leaning towards implementation, but no final decision has been made yet.
Q: Will there be hunger mechanics to prevent Karia from eating too much at once, or to penalize players for not eating for long periods?
Fukui:We considered various options, but during internal development testing, many people expressed a desire for Karia to be able to snack easily and freely. Therefore, the current design allows her to eat whenever she wants without hunger limits.
Q: The previous title, "Atelier Yumia: The Alchemist of Memories & the Fantasmical Land," featured vehicles like motorcycles. However, the current demo only shows a sprint ability with a limited gauge. Will the full version add vehicles or enhance the sprinting capability?
Fukui:Movement in this game centers around"Super Sprint." The sprint gauge in the demo is indeed quite short, but it gradually lengthens as you accumulate food through eating. Additionally, sprinting in certain Style states does not consume the gauge, allowing for long-distance running. Utilizing these methods for movement is the primary way to traverse the map in this game.
Q: In this game's alchemy system, each material has a specific shape, similar to "Atelier Sophie." How exactly do these shapes affect the synthesis process?
Fukui:We referenced the synthesis systems from previous titles in the series to create a new system. This time, while preserving the fun of puzzle-like synthesis, we also aimed to increase freedom, such as allowing players to attach healing effects to attack items.effects like HP restoration. Each material possesses "Mana Fragments" of specific shapes. Combining them allows you to achieve desired effects. The system was built with this concept in mind, allowing players who enjoy deep diving to research extensively.
Q: This title shares the same worldview as "Atelier Yumia: The Alchemist of Memories & the Fantasmical Land." Recent information reveals that besides Yumia, Lug and Renya from the previous protagonist group will also appear. Will they join the party temporarily or permanently? Additionally, Yumia's own story seemed incomplete in the previous game. Will this title complete her storyline, or focus solely on Karia's story?
Hosoi:First, regarding Yumia's role. She serves as Karia's mentor in this game. The unfinished story from the previous title will progress parallel to Karia's story in this game, with both lines eventually converging to reach the conclusion. Therefore, fans who have followed Yumia can fully enjoy this as an independent"Yumia's Continuing Story." Of course, focusing solely on Karia's story is also perfectly fine.
Fukui:Lug and Renya will join the party slightly before the midpoint of the story, a bit later than the new characters, but they will participate in most of the journey.
Q: What are the main differences in field exploration compared to "Atelier Yumia: The Alchemist of Memories & the Fantasmical Land"?
Fukui:The biggest difference is that the map now extends underground.-- Players can explore underground after exploring the surface, traveling back and forth between two visually distinct areas.
Another major systemic change is the ability to throw items. For example, throwing bombs can defeat enemies directly in the field or cause items to react with attribute-based mechanisms. Even gathering points require consideration of which items to carry, expanding this very alchemist-like gameplay, which is a key focus of exploration this time.
Q: Compared to past "Atelier" series titles, this game incorporates more real-time actions and elements, making the overall system more complex. With this design, how does the team ensure that real-time combat doesn't weaken the strategic depth centered around alchemy that the series is known for?
Fukui:Using synthesized items remains crucial in combat. More powerful items require longer preparation times before activation, requiring companions to buy time. You can also craft equipment beforehand to withstand enemy attacks, preparing thoroughly before using items. With this design, real-time combat feels solid. Additionally, time pauses when opening the command menu, allowing players to think calmly about which item to use. Players who prefer command-based combat can also take their time to observe enemy actions and weaknesses before making choices. Items this time are well-integrated into the core of combat.
Q: From "Atelier Yumia: The Alchemist of Memories & the Fantasmical Land" and "Atelier Resleriana: Alchemist of the Red Rose & White Guardian," what inspirations or reflections did the development team gain from player feedback?
Fukui:"Atelier Yumia : The Alchemist of Memories & the Fantasmical Land"period, we intentionally lowered the difficulty of synthesis to allow more players to experience it. However, we received a lot of feedback-- Some players wanted more depth for mastery, and many requested the return of the alchemy cauldron element. Taking these opinions into account, "Atelier Karia: The Kingdom of Night and the Landmark of Memories" focuses on making the "Synthesis" system more engaging and replayable.
On the other hand, the map exploration elements involving height differences in the previous title were well-received, and this feature will be retained in this game. We always strive to faithfully reflect player feedback in our games.
Q: Karia has special abilities like changing form through eating and consuming materials. Do other party members have their own unique abilities or mechanics?
Hosoi:Other party members also receive buff effects when dining with Karia. However, only Karia changes her body size and appearance due to eating; teammates do not undergo such changes.
Q: This title removes the separate inventory and storage design, replacing it with a unified capacity. The demo version has a capacity limit of 5000, which seems lower than the 9999 achievable in the previous title. Can this capacity be increased later in the game?
Fukui:Capacity can be increased later in the game. Bysystems like "Construction," and by completing special tasks, the total capacity will gradually increase.
Q: Is the "Construction" system still limited to specific areas like in the previous title?
Fukui:Just like in the previous title,"Construction" could only be performed in specific fixed areas. However, this time, "Construction" is more tightly integrated with the game systems. For example, you can prepare in advance to fight giant enemies, or arrange facilities to make synthesis more advantageous. The "Construction" system interacts with other systems in this way.
Q: In the demo version, when Karia finds materials in the wild, players must choose between collecting them or snacking on them. If players choose to eat Everythinggj they see instead of collecting, will they face material shortages?
Fukui:There is a mechanic in the game that allowsWhen "Snacking," you don't consume the entire material; instead, you collect part of it and eat some on the spot. Players who particularly enjoy "Snacking" are advised to acquire this skill first to collect materials more efficiently.
Q: Cleaning up alchemy materials has always been somewhat troublesome in the "Atelier" series. Recent titles have addressed this by increasing warehouse capacity, but disposing of unwanted materials remains inconvenient. Other Koei Tecmo games feature auto-sell or decomposition functions. Are there plans to add similar features in the future?
Fukui:Currently, this feature is not in the game, but we are preparing to implement a function that allows bulk decomposition or conversion of unneeded materials into other resources.
Q: Finally, please say a few words to players in Asia.
Fukui:Thank you all for playing our games and providing valuable feedback. We referenced your feedback and reflected it in the game. This title centers around theThe "Synthesis" system connects various other systems, and the "Synthesis" system itself has been made more engaging. We hope you enjoy it and continue to provide feedback, which we will use for further development. Thank you.
Hosoi:Thank you very much for your continued support of the "Atelier"series andGust brand."Atelier Yumia : The Alchemist of Memories & the Fantasmical Land"is a title we worked hard on with the direction of "Next-Generation Atelier" in mind. The final result received somewhat polarized reviews. After considering player feedback, we improved upon some shortcomings of the previous title to create a game that everyone will find enjoyable. Please try it out for yourselves. Thank you.
"Atelier Karia: ~The Kingdom of Night and the Landmark of Memories~" will be released onFebruary 25, 2027. We look forward to witnessing together where this "mentor-student journey" leads.
