Turok: Origins TGS Demo Report: A Fresh Take on a Classic Dish

To be honest, before receiving the invitation to the demo event, I had never paid attention to "Turok: Origins" (Turok: Origins) thisgame, nor had I ever played its predecessors. It wasn't until I visited the game's demo area at "Tokyo Game Show 2026" and personally interacted with the development team, Saber Interactive, members that I learned theThe history of the "Turok" series is far older and richer than I realized—it was one of the best-selling games in the early days of the Nintendo 64 platform and even helped boost N64 sales.

The original "Turok" combined fast-paced action shooting with level exploration, creating a unique world where primal ecology coexists with futuristic technology, proving that mainstream action shooters could be highly competitive on traditional home consoles.

And this time, weThe version of "Turok: Origins" played at TGS is a "reboot" of the "Turok" series. The producer told me that it retains the previous game's worldview and some characters while ensuring all the gaming experiences modern players expect.

In fact, this sense ofThe contrast in IP value created an incredible sense of dissonance during this demo event.

However, here "dissonance" isn't a derogatory term; it's more like the sensory contrast of serving commoner's food on royal tableware, offering a unique flavor.

As mentioned earlier,The "Turok" series first launched in 1997, giving the game a somewhat retro worldview and visual atmosphere—it was the height of the "dinosaur craze" and "space craze," and this title combines both. In the game, players take on the role of human warriors known as Turoks, using various firearms and special skills to battle evil aliens and the dinosaurs they control.

In fact, this setting really has a vintage sci-fi movie feel from the last century: in the game, you can see human warriors wearing high-tech exo-armor while sporting primitive tribal hairstyles and totems, all while traversing subtropical jungles to battle ferocious dinosaurs and aliens.—When these elements are recombined today, they bring a奇妙 sense of freshness.

In terms of gameplay format, "Turok: Origins" largely continues the series' traditional approach—Players, as Turoks, must complete a series of tasks in specific maps, such as defeating swarms of dinosaurs and alien armies or destroying specific mechanical devices. Simply put, you'll experience those very old-school action-shooter tropes, and the series' classic "Brain Bug" weapon makes a return—yes, you can now see how this terrifying killing machine operates under modern HD textures.

On the other hand, the developer responsible for this reboot is none other than the studio behind "Warhammer40K: Space Marine" and "World War Z"Saber Interactive—so you can see many elements reflecting Saber Interactive's "lineage" in this title.

For example, this title retains the"Turok" has always used a first-person shooter perspective, but it also offers a rare one-button view-switching feature, allowing players to switch to third-person at any time. The resulting gameplay feels very similar to the two titles mentioned above.

On the other hand, the inclusion of this perspective isn't just because Saber Interactiveis already good at these things, but also because they genuinely seem to want to take this antique oldIP and add some new flavors. The better battlefield awareness offered by the third-person perspective synergizes well with action games.

I might even say: the two perspectives in this game provided me with nearly two completely different gaming experiences.

In fact, as a reboot that retains past settings, "Turok: Origins" places more emphasis on action than I expected—Firearms remain your primary choice in combat, but the third-person perspective also offers more attack options.

For example, the game features a simple yet effective loop mechanic: when an enemy's remaining health drops below a certain threshold, players can trigger a melee execution animation, and each execution recharges the character's combat skills.—This way, you can rely on melee positioning and health management to engage in a "fight-to-sustain" playstyle.

In this style of gameplay, the third-person perspective becomes an essential tool for gathering battlefield information, letting you clearly understand the changing situation around you, know when to dodge, and when to use skills.

What felt most familiar to me was the arrangement and design of the multiplayer content in this title.

In this game, you'll encounter manyTurok warriors—some excel at dealing damage, others are suited as team tanks, while some resemble assassins or mages... Does that sound familiar? Although I didn't face any major crises during this demo due to the lower difficulty setting, I did feel a hint of mortal danger when facing the final boss—a T-Rex equipped with heavy firearms. It bombarded me with tracking missiles and swept the area with laser beams, forcing me into passive dodging and fleeing.

But on second thought, such aboss indeed fits the game's worldview tone—not only because it's a missile-firing T-Rex, but also because its character design and attack patterns evoke a sense of oppression that demands coordinated teamwork to overcome.

"Turok: Origins" also features character skills, class roles, and a co-op mechanism for up to three players, making it align more closely with the popular concept of multiplayer cooperative gameplay. Imagine if one person distracts the T-Rex by drawing all its missiles while the other two focus on dealing damage—the risk would naturally be minimized.

And this is exactly what Saber Interactive excels at.

However, this mode encouraging player cooperation also raised another concern: does this mean it will force players to team up in certain situations?

Fortunately, the game's producer immediately addressed my concerns—No. Because the game doesn't mechanically penalize solo players; even skills that seem to have clear class roles can actually be swapped out freely.

In other words, solo players can ignore the standard class roles and create a more balanced character with well-rounded abilities. Although challenging theboss will still pose some pressure, but it will never become unmanageable.

Of course, the content we demoed was only a very small portion of the game, and I didn't even fully grasp the skill mechanics of most characters. But one thing is clear: Saber Interactivetruly understands how to revive a classicwhat an IP needs—first, its combat is genuinely satisfying; second, you can truly see echoes of a bygone era in every aspect of it.

At this stage, these features alone are sufficient. More importantly, in today's market, finding a competent"dinosaur-slaying" game is truly no easy feat.
