With upstream memory chip prices continuing to rise, the price surge has directly impacted the pricing structures of various downstream consumer electronics. Even high-end discrete graphics cards have not escaped this trend.
The rising supply prices for VRAM, a core component of graphics cards, have directly driven widespread and significant price increases for end-user GPU products.
Offline GPU retailers have revealed that last year, the RTX 5070 generally retailed steadily between 4,500 and 5,000 yuan. Just a few months later, the market price for the same model has reached the 6,000 to 6,500 yuan range.
The price increase for the higher-end RTX 5080 is even more dramatic. Last year, its average market price was around 8,000 yuan, but current retail prices have soared to nearly 12,000 yuan. The GPU market is fluctuating almost daily, with average daily price hikes of 500 to 1,000 yuan for many popular models.
Surprisingly to many industry observers, the RTX 5080 has instead become the top choice for global consumers amid this industry-wide price surge. The market logic behind this carries a distinct tone of helplessness.
In terms of pure performance, the RTX 5080 doesn't even qualify as a positive iteration. Its actual performance is 9% to 12% lower than the previous generation's flagship, the RTX 4090. When combined with its skyrocketing retail price, the card offers extremely low cost-performance ratio based on paper specifications, making it nearly uncompetitive.
However, when viewed within the context of the current consumer graphics card market, the RTX 5080 actually sits in a price vacuum with no direct competitors.
For instance, AMD's current consumer flagship, the RX 9070 XT, only matches the performance of NVIDIA's RTX 5070 Ti, showing a clear performance gap. Moving up to the RTX 5090, which meets higher performance standards, pushes the price into an ultra-high-end range that is unaffordable for most ordinary consumers.
For the large number of users still relying on older RTX 20 or 30 series cards, the RTX 5080 still represents a substantial performance upgrade. Combined with the complete lack of competitors at this price point, this has created a peculiar market situation where the card receives poor reviews yet continues to sell well.
