UK-based Supermassive Games has announced a new round of layoffs. The developer, known for horror game series such as Until Dawn, The Quarry, and The Dark Pictures Anthology, has initiated a consultation process that could result in up to 75 job cuts. This decision comes shortly after the release of the horror game The Command 8020, though the developer has not directly linked the layoffs to the game's performance.
Supermassive Games stated: "We have made the difficult decision to begin a consultation process on redundancies, which we expect will result in up to 75 colleagues leaving. This is a necessary step to ensure the company's sustainability." The studio also emphasized that its top priority remains supporting employees affected by this process. These layoffs represent another severe challenge for the developer. In July 2025, Supermassive conducted similar layoffs, affecting up to 36 employees. At that time, the company also delayed the release of The Command 8020 from its originally planned date to the first half of 2026.
It cannot yet be concluded that the sales or reviews of The Command 8020 are the direct cause of these layoffs. Supermassive explained that the decision was made to ensure the company's sustainability but did not provide specific financial data for the game or other definitive reasons. Therefore, the connection between the horror game's release and the layoffs remains speculative at this point.
As of now, Supermassive is continuing to develop new projects. On its official website, the studio still positions itself as a developer of cinematic games and states its commitment to creating large-scale projects with small teams.
