Renowned game analysis outlet Digital Foundry has released a technical analysis of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered on Switch 2. The conclusion is somewhat disheartening: while the visuals are impressive for the console, its performance leaves much to be desired.
In terms of graphics, Oblivion Remastered runs at 1080p in docked mode and 900p in handheld mode, utilizing DLSS to bridge the resolution gap. According to Digital Foundry, the visual presentation is impressive, even surpassing that of the Xbox Series S. Given the performance disparity between the two hardware sets, this is a noteworthy technical achievement. However, there are shortcomings in vegetation: foliage density is significantly reduced compared to other versions, with some entire trees missing from the map. Additionally, distant objects often suffer from pop-in; assets appearing and disappearing based on player distance severely breaks immersion in this open-world game.
Furthermore, the Switch 2 targets 30 FPS, but maintaining this consistently proves difficult. Digital Foundry pointed out severe frame pacing issues: the camera frequently stutters, with frame times fluctuating between 16ms and 50ms.
However, there is some good news. The performance degradation over time seen in the PS5 and Xbox Series S|X versions does not appear to occur on the Switch 2. Digital Foundry suggests this may be related to the 30 FPS cap, as the game runs at an uncapped 60 FPS on other platforms. Overall stability is also described as superior to other platforms. That said, the site reported multiple crashes since launch, clearly indicating that this version is far from perfect. Patches from Bethesda and Virtuos are expected over time to address at least some of these issues.
