Diablo V is scheduled for release in Spring 2029. Blizzard is currently refining the narrative details of the world players will explore. At the start of Diablo V, Diablo has already emerged victorious, and Sanctuary has fallen.
Narrative Director Jennifer Hepler stated that there is a "special bond" between the protagonist and Diablo. Players will gradually learn the reasons behind this connection throughout the game. While it enables the protagonist to confront the Lord of Terror, Diablo, it also makes the protagonist more susceptible to Diablo's influence.
This bond will also open the path to the "Realm of Terror." This area is Diablo's personal domain, which the protagonist can enter and survive, thereby gaining some new abilities that have not yet been disclosed. The development team has not revealed the specific effects of these abilities at this time.
The world structure will also undergo significant changes. Since there are no functioning towns at the start of the game, players need to form a traveling caravan and recruit merchants, artisans, and companions along the way. The caravan will replace the fixed towns that previously served as hubs for supplies and gathering in the series.
Blizzard has also added a mechanism called "Fear Shaping" to the new title. The Fear Commanders corrupting the world will alter the terrain, so players will see environmental changes each time they return to the same location.
Diablo V is currently targeting a Spring 2029 release window. Blizzard has not yet revealed more details about the abilities unlocked in the Realm of Terror.
