Koei Tecmo recently revealed the protagonist artwork for "Wo Long 2: Phoenix Flames Across the Sky." The protagonist is an unnamed warrior whose hometown was destroyed by Cao Cao's forces. The official text uses the gender-neutral pronoun "TA," indicating that, like its predecessor, the game will allow players to freely choose between male and female genders and customize their appearance. Driven by complex motives of revenge and protection, the protagonist embarks on a journey through the chaotic Three Kingdoms era, plagued by demons.
The image of Pang Tong, a central character throughout the story, has also been revealed. He wears an eyepatch mask and wields a massive staff, with his character design reimagined by blending the legendary flair of "Romance of the Three Kingdoms," historical records from "Records of the Three Kingdoms," and folk tales. Narratively, this establishes a partnership where "the protagonist handles combat, while Pang Tong handles strategy." Pang Tong does not blindly endorse the protagonist's obsession with revenge; he often advises them, reminding them of the plight of the common people amidst the chaos of war. Zhuge Liang will appear in classic battles such as Red Cliffs, and the talented lady Huang Yueying will also play a key role in the main storyline.
The game has undergone significant reforms, completely abandoning linear levels in favor of dynamically evolving open battlefields. The outcome of local battles will alter surrounding terrain, strongholds, and faction distributions. The iconic morale flag system remains but has been adapted into a regional mechanic; capturing strongholds or destroying enemy banners can change regional morale, no longer forcing players to follow fixed routes and allowing them to freely choose their challenge order. Koei Tecmo confirmed that the game will be showcased at TGS 2026 (Tokyo Game Show, September 17-21), where new gameplay demos and more story details will be released.
