Blizzard Confirms Two CDPR Blockbusters Coming to Battle.net! But Has No Plans to Transform It into a Comprehensive Store

Blizzard has confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077 and the remastered version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will be coming to Battle.net. However, this does not mean Battle.net is preparing to transform into a comprehensive game store like Steam or the Epic Games Store.

Andrew Guerrero, Vice President of Product Management and Global Insights at Blizzard, stated that the company has no intention of emulating Steam or the Epic Games Store. Battle.net has its own user base, many of whom are core players enthusiastic about Blizzard games and similar genres; Blizzard will only consider bringing a game to the platform if it suits these players.

Both Cyberpunk 2077 and the remastered version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt are titles from CD Projekt Red. Blizzard believes these major RPGs share overlapping interests with Battle.net's existing player base. Other external titles previously launched on the platform include DOOM: The Dark Ages, The Outer Worlds 2, and Destiny 2.

Following Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard, Activision titles such as Crash Bandicoot and Call of Duty have also come to Battle.net. As games from other publishers join the platform, some may view this as an attempt to expand Battle.net's store offerings, but Guerrero emphasizes that curated content remains the platform's focus.

According to him, Blizzard will carefully assess whether existing players truly enjoy a given title, while also considering its quality, potential for greater visibility, and suitability for Battle.net. This means the platform will continue to selectively welcome external games rather than opening up its store content on a massive scale.

If Battle.net were to adopt the marketplace model used by Steam or the Epic Games Store, it would need to handle large-scale content management and increased backend operations, while competing in a market with clear leaders. For now, Blizzard continues to position Battle.net as a platform tailored to its core users, offering a curated selection of similar gaming experiences.
