NasNakarus, developer of the indie game Needle In A Haystack Simulator, announced the addition of a "AAA Mode," poking fun at the guidance design in Marvel's Wolverine with dense route hints. The original game required players to find a single needle among five million strands of hay, while the new mode directly leads players to the target.
In the demo footage, multiple yellow guide lines appear on the ground, with huge exclamation marks and distance markers above haystacks. The top-right corner displays "Objective: Find the Needle." When players press the guide key, the screen turns black and white to highlight the target; if they move in any other direction, a "Wrong Way" warning pops up, forcibly returning the character to the correct path.
This design targets the route guidance in Marvel's Wolverine, which has recently sparked discussion. The game uses prominent "scent lines" to represent Wolverine's keen sense of smell, providing clear hints for forward paths and collectibles. While similar designs are common in open-world games, some reviews consider them overly guiding when applied to smaller, linear levels.
NasNakarus called this mode a "tribute" to Marvel's Wolverine, and the related post has surpassed 7 million views. Comments included many jokes about modern AAA game guidance design, while some players argued against using this to attack other game companies, questioning why such long-standing design choices have suddenly become controversial.
Another indie game, Destroyer 2, also joined the conversation, with the development team stating that there would be no "blue trails telling players where to go" in their game.
