RTS on a Controller? Total War: Warhammer 40,000 Has a Reliable Solution

Recently, Dave Petry, Combat Product Lead at Creative Assembly, gave an interview addressing the industry's longstanding controversy that "RTS games are unsuitable for controller operation," and introduced the development philosophy behind controller adaptation for Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000.

For a long time, real-time strategy (RTS) games have been considered exclusive to keyboard and mouse, with many players believing that controllers struggle with frequent actions like box selection and multi-unit micromanagement. However, Dave Petry stated that the notion "controllers can't play RTS" is itself a misconception. A controller is merely an input device and, more importantly, a tool for accessible gaming; the quality of the experience depends on the game design itself.

This title did not adopt a remedial approach of "finishing the PC version first and then porting/adapting for controllers." Instead, controller interaction logic was developed in parallel with the combat and campaign systems from the early stages of the project, rather than being patched in later. The team drew on successful experience from their previous work on Halo Wars 2. Benefiting from the structural advantages of the Total War series—where turn-based grand campaign maps and real-time battles are separated—it avoids the need for extensive automation of units (like villagers in Age of Empires II on console) to circumvent cumbersome micromanagement, thereby reducing the pressure of adapting for controllers.

The developers admitted that some high-difficulty, precise maneuvers, such as loop charges and luring enemies with Lords, still require players to adapt and learn when using a controller. However, the current internal build has already reached a very solid level of completion. Controller support is not just for console players; it is fully supported on PC as well, providing an option for those who prefer controllers or need accessible input solutions.

Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000 is scheduled for release in 2027 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam. The official team has not yet released external gameplay footage of the controller mode, but they will continue to iterate and refine this control system in the future.
