Recently, gaming blogger Wokenessisevil posted on Twitter to spark a discussion about the artistic design of female characters in games, using Chinese titles like Yuan Gong Jian and Showa American Story, as well as the Korean title Stellar Blade: Blood Rain, as case studies.
The blogger stated that there is nothing wrong with sexy-style female characters appearing in video games, and expressed relief that some games remain unaffected by DEI design trends. The post included screenshots of female protagonists from several games and garnered tens of thousands of views after publication, sparking heated debate within overseas gaming communities.
The player community has split into several distinct voices. Some players believe that charming female characters are an integral part of the gaming experience and a significant factor driving player spending, urging developers to restore traditional fan-oriented artistic content.
However, some players argue that if a team invests heavily in polishing character appearances while neglecting core game design elements like gameplay and levels, the work will still have shortcomings even if the character designs are outstanding. Some cite Stellar Blade: Blood Rain as an example, believing that while its character art is impressive, the overall completeness of the game itself does not match the quality of its characters.
Other players pointed out that sexy designs are not the only correct answer for female character design. Games should also embrace diverse body types and appearances; excellent character development does not necessarily rely on exaggerated physical representations, as personality and story are the core of a character. Some also questioned whether players would still accept a game that relies solely on sexual appeal to attract attention while offering mediocre gameplay content.
