KRAFTON-published and Boundary-developed top-down action RPG "TARAE: The Unbound," an Eastern dark fantasy title, recently revealed new information. The game is targeted for release in 2027, though a specific launch date has not yet been announced.
The worldview of "TARAE: The Unbound" draws from the Buddhist concept of the Six Paths of Reincarnation. The boundaries between these paths have shattered, forming the adventure stage of Taegui Island. The world is filled with mythical monsters and spirits from across East Asia, while the antagonist "Agasa" seeks to completely destroy the order of reincarnation. This is not an open-world game; the main campaign is divided into six acts, each containing 3-4 chapters, with a target playtime of approximately 40 hours for the single-player main story.
The campaign is a purely single-player experience, excluding synchronous multiplayer to ensure narrative impact. After completing the main story, endgame loot farming, build customization, and player trading features are unlocked. The campaign itself serves as a complete endpoint for gameplay, without forcing players to pursue endgame content.
The game offers six distinctly different Eastern-themed classes: Samurai (Warrior), Tiger Hunter, Shaman, Feng Shui Master, Female Ninja, and War Demon Martial Artist. Each class has its own resource mechanics and damage systems, providing a unique gameplay feel. After completing the main story, all classes can be directly unlocked for use in endgame modes without needing to replay the main storyline. Combat emphasizes skillful operation rather than simply relying on superior gear stats; the forces of Yin and Yang, along with eight deities, will provide buffs or negative interference during battles, further altering the course of combat.
Boss design is a key focus of this title, featuring over 80 bosses, each with moves and defense logic tailored to their mythological backgrounds. At Gamescom, foreign media journalists challenged the boss Goro and were defeated; even internal development staff who took up the challenge fell to the same boss, highlighting the high difficulty threshold of the game's bosses. Developers stated that designing a complete set of behavioral logic for each boss was one of the most labor-intensive aspects of the development process.
The team behind "TARAE: The Unbound" stated that many similar ARPGs on the market are set in a Western medieval context. This title aims to differentiate itself by drawing on Chinese, Japanese, and Korean folklore as well as Buddhist cosmology. Future plans include continuous character updates in a seasonal format, annual DLC releases to expand into new regions, and long-term content operations.
