According to the latest news, GTA VI will introduce a gunfight mechanic highly similar to the iconic "Dead Eye" system from Red Dead Redemption 2, marking another major evolution in Rockstar's open-world game formula.
While slow-motion combat is not a new concept for the GTA series—Michael De Santa had a special ability in GTA V that could slow down time—GTA VI seems to push this basic concept closer to Red Dead Redemption 2, borrowing its visual language and functional logic.
From the extended gameplay footage released so far, GTA VI features a purple meter below the health bar, accompanied by an eye icon. In multiple combat scenes, action unfolds in slow motion, making the connection to "Dead Eye" unmistakable. Although Rockstar has not officially named this ability "Dead Eye," the combination of the eye icon, dedicated meter, and slow-motion shooting clearly indicates that the system is heavily inspired by Red Dead Redemption 2.
It has been revealed that Jason is described as a more basic combatant compared to Lucia, who has further developed her fighting skills through martial arts training. Currently, only Jason has been shown using this "Dead Eye" ability, suggesting it may be his exclusive skill, justified by his military training background.
In Red Dead Redemption 2, "Dead Eye" allows players to slow down time during gunfights and focus on targets, becoming more powerful as the game progresses. GTA VI may handle this concept differently, given that modern open-world crime games have vastly different combat needs compared to Western-themed titles.
However, the presence of a dedicated meter suggests that GTA VI's slow-motion ability won't just be a cinematic effect; players may need to strategically manage its usage during particularly dangerous encounters.
Rockstar has not yet fully disclosed all details of GTA VI's suspected "Dead Eye" system. Questions remain about how the meter works, how it charges, and whether the ability will evolve as the game progresses.
