Square Enix will release Final Fantasy VII Rebirth on April 8, 2027, concluding the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy. Senior executive Yoshinori Kitase also stated that the team has not completely ruled out the possibility of developing spin-off titles in the future.
Yoshinori Kitase confirmed that the third installment will bring a definitive conclusion to the current storyline, without leaving any so-called "true ending" for another title to address. The team currently has no plans to create such an ending separately. The development team is focusing its efforts on completing Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, aiming to make it a complete conclusion to the trilogy.
When discussing the future possibilities of the series, Kitase looked back at the situation when the original Final Fantasy VII was completed in 1997. At that time, the team was originally prepared to move on to other projects, but the game and its characters continued to gain popularity, which later led to spin-off works such as the film Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children and the game Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII.
Kitase did not guarantee that this history would repeat itself after the release of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. He indicated that future directions could still be influenced by player reactions to the trilogy's conclusion and the series' characters, so Square Enix has not completely closed the door on developing new spin-off titles.
In addition to potential spin-offs, the team is also preparing post-launch downloadable content. Current plans include a chapter focused on Sephiroth, as well as further content exploring the stories of Vincent and the Turks.
Kitase also stated that the team is carefully considering additional character-themed content, which may take a form similar to the previous chapter centered around Yuffie. The specific characters have not yet been announced. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2.
