The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is set to release a new expansion, "#Funtime," with Paula Mejsner from Fool's Theory serving as the lead writer. Even before joining the project, she had studied the game's first expansion, "Hearts of Stone," for her undergraduate thesis.
Mejsner completed this thesis in 2017 while studying comparative literature, titled in English "Video Games as a Way of Experiencing Literature: An Analysis of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt DLC 'Hearts of Stone.'" At the time, she was not yet involved in any projects related to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
Mejsner stated that she fell in love with the series while playing The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and its "Hearts of Stone" expansion. Her thesis primarily discussed the rich literary references in the game and its connections to classic Polish literature.
The thesis covered Wyspiański's "The Wedding" and analyzed how the demonic character Gaunter O'Dimm absorbs elements from various cultural works. Mejsner said she hoped this research would prove to some professors that video games are worthy of study and constitute cultural texts.
Discussing her current involvement in creating The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt expansion, Mejsner expressed pride in the work, acknowledging that luck also played a part. Writing stories for Geralt was a dream she held even while working on her undergraduate thesis.
Nearly a decade later, Mejsner has transitioned from being a researcher of "Hearts of Stone" to the lead writer of "#Funtime." She stated that fulfilling her wish to contribute to The Witcher series has been incredibly exciting.
