Kodansha Game Lab announces that the Steam store page for the new physics simulation game "Legacy Code" has officially gone live today, and wishlisting is now open.
"Legacy Code" is a physics simulation game. Players can freely combine various parts, including biological materials and inorganic objects, to create mysterious creatures called "Mechanical Beasts" and control their actions. Equipped with the proprietary "Marionette Engine," the game ensures smooth operation regardless of part combinations, giving birth to "Mechanical Beasts" whose movements are difficult even for their creators to predict, filled with unknowns and surprises.
This title participated in the independent game competition "SENSE OF WONDER NIGHT 2026" held at "Tokyo Game Show 2026." Aimed at discovering creative game works, "Legacy Code" received high praise for its unique originality, standing out from over 1,500 entries worldwide to become one of the final eight finalists.

■ About "Legacy Code"
"Legacy Code" is a physics simulation game. Players can combine various discarded objects to create mysterious creatures known as "Mechanical Beasts." Parts such as heads, arms, legs, and motors can be freely combined, resulting in Mechanical Beasts with diverse appearances and movement styles.
The biggest feature of this title is its independently developed physics simulation system. No matter how imaginative the combination of parts, the mechanical beasts will truly "move." Sometimes, an individual assembled exactly as envisioned might walk in a completely unexpected way. Until it actually starts moving, even the player who created it cannot predict the final result—this experience full of chance and unpredictability is the core of the gameplay.
■ A gameplay loop of Create (Assemble) → Combat → Collect (Acquire Parts) that constantly expands the experience
The core gameplay loop of this title consists of three parts: "Creation (Assembly)," "Combat (Adventuring by controlling your self-created mechanical beasts)," and "Collection (Acquiring new parts through combat)." Use newly acquired parts to further modify your mechanical beast's body and throw it back into battle. By repeating this cycle, you can cultivate the strongest mechanical beast that belongs only to you. This cycle changes not only the appearance of the mechanical beast but also the world itself that players can explore.
■ Combine continuously to become stronger and larger. The explorable world will also keep expanding
Players will control their handcrafted Mechanical Beasts, traversing deserts, snow-capped mountains, and sometimes delving into ruins, exploring various worlds. Along the way, new enemies will continually appear to block their path.
Winning battles grants you parts from defeated enemies. By continuously adding and recombining new parts, the mechanical beast's body will grow larger in appearance while gaining greater power. With more legs supporting its body, arms reaching further, and each strike becoming heavier, players will be able to challenge formidable foes that were once unbeatable as their mechanical beast grows, and the world available for exploration will expand accordingly.
The Mechanical Beast, initially pieced together from a small pile of discarded objects, will eventually grow into a colossal entity that demands awe. With each "Create → Combat → Collect" cycle, the Mechanical Beast becomes bigger, stronger, and increasingly unique to you.
■ Heads, fangs, and even electric fans—the possibilities for assembly are endless
The parts that allow Mechanical Beasts to grow and thrive come from various everyday items found everywhere—including doll heads, character merchandise, electric fans, televisions, 3D puzzles, dentures, chains, cacti, and more. Each part not only looks different but also has distinct movement characteristics. Depending on the combination, the Mechanical Beast's appearance and behavior will change dramatically. These discarded objects, carrying a hint of nostalgia yet appearing somewhat grotesque, will be reassembled by players to gain new life.
■ Selected as a Finalist for Tokyo Game Show 2026 "SENSE OF WONDER NIGHT 2026"
"Legacy Code" was selected as one of the final eight finalists for the "SENSE OF WONDER NIGHT 2026" competition at the Tokyo Game Show, held on Thursday, September 17, 2026, at the Makuhari Messe International Conference Center.
This competition aims to discover game concepts that make people feel as though the world has shifted slightly "the moment they see it or hear the concept," thereby evoking a sense of wonder in players. Entries were sourced from a global open call for independent games at Tokyo Game Show 2026, receiving over 1,500 submissions. This year, the organizers selected eight titles, including "Legacy Code," from these entries. The creators of the finalist works will personally take the stage to present their games. "Legacy Code" was highly praised for its unique concept of "mysterious creatures with unpredictable movements born from discarded objects" and successfully made the cut.
