"Ninjala 2: Unknown Planet" Shifts to PvE Open World, Player Demand Drives Gameplay Overhaul

Ninjala 2: Unknown Planet is scheduled for release in Spring 2027. Instead of continuing the previous game's focus on PvP battles, the new title shifts to open-world PvE gameplay, adding exploration, crafting, character progression, and up to four-player co-op.

Director Mototaka Kaneda stated that as hardware entered a new generation, the development team reconsidered the future direction of the series. They wanted to further showcase the world and characters of Ninjala, rather than limiting gameplay to competitive matches.

Player surveys also influenced the direction of the new title. In addition to opinions favoring continued PvP or solo play, "deeply experiencing the game world" and "fighting alongside friends" ranked high among player requests. The development team felt these responses aligned with their own judgment, leading them to create a co-op-focused open-world action game.

Following the gameplay shift, Ninjas and Ninja Gum remain the foundation of the action system, but some moves clearly designed for PvP have been removed. The team has added actions better suited for battling multiple enemies. The "Gum Grapple," originally used to rush toward locked-on targets, has also been adjusted, allowing players to move freely across the open world.

The game map features verticality, allowing players to climb walls, cross obstacles, or move along rails. Mototaka Kaneda noted that the new title places great emphasis on movement flow, enabling fast traversal from the early stages and gradually unlocking enhanced mobility as players progress.

The new title can be played offline in single-player mode and supports up to four-player co-op. Players can progress through the story, complete missions, or take down large enemies together, and can also temporarily recruit other players for assistance. The team has minimized resource competition in multiplayer modes and ensured equal distribution of co-op rewards, though some content remains restricted by individual story progress.

Ninjala 2: Unknown Planet will be released in two parts. The development team aims to attract players new to open-world and PvE gameplay with an accessible first part, followed by a second part that continues the content. The first part will include main story missions as well as tasks and challenges scattered across the map. Regarding the return of PvP, Mototaka Kaneda stated that they are actively researching the possibility, but no concrete plans have been confirmed yet.
